1. A non-rotating shaft, shown below, is being considered on a cold drawn square
profile with machined groove. The used material is steel (Sut=400 Mpa) and the
reliability of the components should be 99%. Estimate the endurance limit for the
shaft and the allowable bending moment using a safety factor of 5.0. Stress
concentration related data is provided on the next page.
2. A solid shaft of diameter d is used in power transmission. Due to modification of
the existing transmission system, it is required to replace the solid shaft by a hollow
shaft of the same material and equally strong in torsion. Further, the weight of the
hollow shaft per metre length should be half of the solid shaft. Determine the outer
diameter of the hollow shaft in terms of d.
3. Find the diameter of the highly polished shaft without flaws and simply supported
at A and D as shown below. The loads on the shaft are: Vertical loads of 1000 N
and 2000 N; horizontal load of 1500 N. Power transmitted is 50 kW at 1000 rpm.
The ultimate strength and yield strength of steel are 770 MPa and 580 MPa. The
maximum allowable shear stress is minimum of 0.3 Syt and 0.18 Sut.
