EDITING AND OMISSION
A. Editing and Omission
Editing is the process of making changes to a text or film, deciding what will be
removed and what will be kept, in order to prepare it for being printed or shown.
B. Rules of editing:
⚫ Always follow the PPACTS RULE while editing a passage.
⚫ PPACTS stands for:
⚫ P – Preposition
⚫ P – Pronoun
⚫ A – Article/determiner
⚫ C – Conjunction
⚫ T – Tense/Verb Forms
⚫ S – Spelling
⚫ Make sure that the prepositions, pronouns, articles, conjunctions, tense and
the verbs have been used correctly.
⚫ After reading the passage, make sure the tense has been used properly.
⚫ Look whether the subject and the verb are agreeing with each other.
C. A sample exercise on editing:
1. I jumped on the pool. I jumped into the pool.
2. Rohan said that she was an honest boy Rohan said that he was an honest
boy.
3. I have been watched T.V. I have been watching T.V.
4. I will meet you tomorow. I will meet you tomorrow.
5. Shaheen play badminton everyday. Shaheen plays badminton everyday.
D. Omission:
Omitting is a stage of the writing process in which a writer does not include or
mention preposition, article, conjunctions, tenses, pronouns, modal verbs, etc in
order to produce a grammatically correct version of a doc.
In case of omission check the tense , rules of subject-verb agreement and make
sure that the word that does not make any sense gets removed.
For e.g., Martha a broke her toy while playing.
Look at the sentence given above , the usage of ‘a’ is not required here .Hence ,
we can omit ‘a’ from the above sentence.
