VARIABLES IN A LAB

In an experiment, many factors can alter a reaction. The changing quantities are called
variables.
Examples of variables:
▪ Time
▪ Temperature
▪ pH
▪ Length
▪ Weight
▪ Type of substances used.
▪ Quantity/Number of substances.
▪ Location
▪ Amount of sunlight
▪ Humidity

Types of variables:
▪ Controlled Variables: These are factors that you want to remain constant throughout
an experiment’
▪ Manipulated/Independent Variable: ONE factor that is changed during an
experiment. This is usually the factor that you are investigating.
▪ Responding/Dependent Variable: This is the factor that changes due to the change
of the manipulated variable. This is usually 1 variable, but many factors can be
affected in more complexed experiments.
