PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

1. Form

A. Affirmative Sentences

🔹 Structure:
➡ Subject + main verb (base form) (+ -s for third-person singular)

Subject Verb "to work" (work) Verb "to go" (go)


I work go
You work go
He/She/It works goes
We work go
You work go
They work go

📌 Rule for adding -s in the third-person singular:


✅ Regular verbs → +s

 She reads a book.

✅ Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -x, -o, -ss → +es

 He watches TV.
 She goes to school.

✅ Verbs ending in a consonant + y → -y → +ies

 He studies English. study - studies


 She tries hard. (suglasnik + y – onda brisemo y pa dodajemo ies) try - tries
 !!!!!!!!!! He plays (vokal + y – dodajemo samo s)

B. Negative Sentences

🔹 Structure:
➡ Subject + do/does + not + main verb (base form)

Subject Negative form of "to work" (work)


I do not (don’t) work
You do not (don’t) work
He/She/It does not (doesn’t) works
Subject Negative form of "to work" (work)
We do not (don’t) work
You do not (don’t) work
They do not (don’t) work

📌 Examples:
✅ I don’t like coffee.
✅ She doesn’t work on Sundays.
✅ They don’t play football.

C. Interrogative Sentences

🔹 Structure:
➡ Do/Does + subject + main verb (base form)?

Question Answer (Yes) Answer (No)


Do you work here? Yes, I do. No, I don’t.
Does she play tennis? Yes, she does. No, she doesn’t.

📌 Examples:
✅ Do you like ice cream? Yes, I do
✅ Where does he live? He lives in Switzerland
✅ Do they speak English? No, they do not.

2. Usage

✅ Habits (navika) and routines (uz often, usually, sometimes…)

 I wake up at 7 AM every day.


 She drinks coffee in the morning. (every morning)

✅ General truths and facts

 The sun rises in the east.


 Water boils at 100°C.

✅ Permanent situations and states (TRAJNE/STALNE)

 She lives in Belgrade.


 They work in a hospital.
 I like drinking coffee.
 I don’t belong here.

✅ Schedules and timetables (trains, movies, classes, etc.)

 The train leaves at 6 PM. The train will leave at 6 PM


 The movie starts at 8 o’clock.
