A World Without Meat

Human actions are pushing our planet to its limits, and we have already started paying the price. We need
to stop climate change and reverse environmental damage. Fortunately, there are some ways we can be
more sustainable and kinder to our planet. One of them is by adopting a vegan diet.
Meat production has a huge impact on our planet. Raising billions of animals for food every year uses huge
amounts of natural resources, like fresh water and land. It also generates huge amounts of waste and 5
pollution. If we stop eating animal products and start eating more plants, we can save resources and slow
down climate change. In 2021, the United Nations issued a report on climate change that recommended
governments around the world to reduce meat consumption in their countries. It identified a plant-based
diet as a major opportunity to reduce climate change. This is something everyone can do. As individuals,
we can use our food choices to help save the planet. Becoming vegan reduces greenhouse gas emissions. 10
In fact, Oxford University also conducted a study that found that going vegan is the biggest way we can
reduce our carbon footprint by up to 73%.
The reason why veganism can make such a difference is that animal products generate greenhouse gases
every step of the way from farm to plate. Farmers clear land and chop down forests to make grazing
pastures for animals and a huge amount of farmland is used to grow animal feed. Raising animals also 15
produces an immense amount of waste, which accounts for 32% of global methane emissions. A single
cow can create 100 kilos of methane a year. And scientists are now certain that it is responsible for 30% of
global warming since pre-industrial times. Animal waste also pollutes our rivers and oceans. When too
much nitrogen and phosphorus from animal waste gets into the water, it creates dead zones where
marine life cannot survive because there isn’t any oxygen. Then, meat requires processing before people 20
can eat it; this requires a lot of energy. To produce half a kilo of beef, we need the same amount of energy
that a fridge needs to run for a month. Raising animals also requires a lot of water. 41% of the water used
in farming goes to growing animal feed.
So, how does turning to alternative sources of protein instead of meat help the planet? A vegan diet can
help reduce methane emissions by 45%, which would be critical to slowing global warming. Also, 25
producing plant-based meat emits up to 90% fewer greenhouse gases and plant-based meat alternatives
use 99% less land than conventional meat. If the world went vegan, deforestation would decline by 94%.
Plant-based protein needs less processing and is much more energy-efficient than meat and also saves a
lot of water. If everyone followed a plant-based diet, we could free up 75% of global farmland so we could
use it to grow food for people and combat world hunger. 30
The way we live now is not sustainable. Still, we have the power to create a sustainable food system for
people, for animals and for the planet. Removing animals as a food source will solve many of the world’s
problems including the biggest one - climate change.
