Biotechnology in Energy Development

We're about to explore how biotechnology can help develop new, sustainable energy sources by optimizing
biomass and energy-generating microbes. We'll focus on how these technologies improve energy efficiency
and support environmental protection.

Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a scientific field that deals with the use of living organisms or their
components to achieve specific goals.

- This includes applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry.

- One of the innovative applications is the use of biotechnology to convert living organisms into energy
sources.

Bioenergy
Energy derived from living organisms such as plants and animals. It is renewable and
environmentally friendly.

Using Living Organisms to Produce Energy

A. Biodegradation

Biodegradation
Biodegradation is the process of converting organic matter (such as organic waste) into an
energy source using living organisms such as bacteria.

- This process occurs naturally, or is artificially controlled in warehouses where waste is converted into
energy, often producing methane gas that can be used as an energy source.
- Here are the basic steps of biodegradation:

Hydrolysis

- In this first stage, bacteria break down complex organic matter into simpler units, such as:
carbohydrates sugars
proteins amino acids
and fats fatty acids

- For example, starch (a carbohydrate) is broken down into glucose:

(C6H10O5)n + H2O → nC6H12O6

Acidogenesis

- In this step, acidogenic bacteria convert the sugars and amino acids from the initial breakdown into
short-chain fatty acids or alcohol, along with producing gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Acetic acid production (Acetogenesis)

- Bacteria perform an additional process to convert the fatty acids and gases produced in the
previous stage into acetic acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.

Methanogenesis

- In this final stage, methanogenic bacteria convert acetic acid or carbon dioxide and hydrogen into
methane gas (CH₄) and water.
* CH3COOH → CH4 + CO2
or
* CO2 + 4H2 → CH4 + 2H2O

B. Biofuels

Biofuels
Biofuels are a type of energy source produced from living organisms such as plants or algae.

- This includes ethanol and biodiesel:

Chemical processes for the formation of biofuels

1. Bioethanol Production (Fermentation)

- Bioethanol production begins by converting starchy or sugary substances into simple sugars (such as
glucose) through hydrolysis.
-These sugars are then fermented using yeasts to produce ethanol (C₂H₅OH) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

2. Biodiesel Production (Esterification)

- In this process, vegetable oils or animal fats (containing triglycerides) are reacted with alcohol
(usually methanol or ethanol) in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
