1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and B and only two (2) questions in section C.
3. Non- programmable calculators and mathematical tables may be used.
4. Where necessary the following constants may be used;
(i) Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10m/s2 or 10 N/kg
(ii) Density of water = 1g/cm3
(iii) Velocity of sound in air=330m/s

SECTION A (16 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section.
1. For each of the item (i) to (x), choose the correct answer from among the alternatives and write its

3. (a) A concave mirror can be used as a magnifying mirror. By using a clear ray diagram show how
can you obtain a magnified, erect image of an optic pin placed in front of a concave mirror.
(b) (i) When a slide projector is used the slide must be put upside down and the image is magnified
laterally as well as vertically. Explain this statement
(ii) A simple microscope of focal length of 5cm is used to read the division of scale 1.5mm in
size. How large will the size of divisions be seen through a simple microscope?
4. (a) A trolley moving at uniform speed on a horizontal bench slows down when a lump of plasticine
dropped vertically sticks to it. As a physicist explain to your friend why trolleys slow down
(b) A ball A of mass 0.4kg moving with a velocity of 12m/s makes head-to-head collisions with
another ball B of mass 0.6kg initially moving with a velocity of 8m/s. if after the collisions the ball
A moves backward and its velocity is reduced to 10m/s. Find the final velocity of the ball B.
(c) A uniform rod 1m long of weight 0.5N is supported horizontally on two knife edges placed
10cm from their ends. What will be the reactions at these supports when a weight of 1N is
suspended 10cm from the midpoint of the rod?

5. (a) When Manuel Neuer was catching a ball, he finds one of his hand paining and failed to proceed
playing a game. But the team’s physician took him to the hospital and he find his left hand was
broken.
(i) Name the device which diagnosed Manuel Neuer’s hand in the hospital.
(ii) By using a well labeled diagram, explain the mode of action of a device which
diagnosed Neuer’s hand in the hospital.
(b)An airplane is flying east at 200km/hr its velocity relative to the air. While a 100km/hr wind is
blowing 450 northeast, what is the velocity of the airplane according to the observer on the
ground
6. (a) Earthquake is rumbling and shaking of the earth’s surface occurs as when continental plates
collide and push each other. Explain three effects of occurrence of earthquakes in human’s life.
(b) The greenhouse effect is the process in which the emission of radiation by the atmosphere
warms the earth’s surface. It caused by gases which act a mirror by reflecting back to the earth
some of the heat. Explain four greenhouse gases you know and gives their sources.
7. (a) An electric iron is labeled 240V, 1000W. What does this mean? Find the total cost of running
simultaneously refrigerator rated 400W and a radio set rated 60W for 5 hours if electricity costs
Tsh.3000 per KWh.
(b) A cell supplies current of 0.6A through a 2Ω coil and a current of 0.2A through a 7Ω coil.
Calculate the e.m.f and internal resistance of the cell
8. (a) In manufacturing industries friction force always decreases the working efficiency of machine.
If the work input on a machine is 900J and work against friction was 50J
i. Calculate the efficiency of a machine
ii. Explain two ways that can improve the efficiency
(b) Draw an ideal pulley system with a velocity ratio of 4. A certain first class lever of length
2.5m has a velocity ratio of 12 and efficiency of 85%,
i. How far from the fulcrum is the effort applied?
ii. What effort is required to lift a load weighing 75N?

9. (a) You are a manager in electronic company during the designing of electronic circuit all
technicians in your company request npn transistor. By giving three points explain how npn
transistor and pnp transistor differs
(b)Describe the circuit diagram for npn common emitter single stage amplifier.
(c) From the above diagram indicate the direction of flow of current of base (Ib), collector (Ic) and
emitter (Ie), hence calculate Ib and the current gain of the amplifier if Ic=3.25mA and Ie=3.30mA

10. (a) The figure below shows a top of a security door, perhaps in a bank. Study carefully the diagram
and explain the mechanism of opening the door when the security officer presses a switch to let a
customer in a bank. Also explain the function of the springs.
(b) Explain three ways that used to reduce eddy current
(c) State the laws of electromagnetic induction.
(d) A step-up transformer is designed to operate from 20V ac to deliver energy to an appliance
marked 250V,100W. if the efficiency of the transformer is 90%, determine the primary current11.
11. (a) A pipe is closed at one end has a length of 10cm. If the velocity of sound in air of the pipe is
340m/s.
i. Calculate frequency of 5th overtone
ii. Give one reason why the frequency of the fundamental may alter during the day
(b)Explain the following phenomena as applied in physics field
i. A bat fly in the dark during the night without hitting an obstacle
ii. Why it is not advisable for soldiers to match across bridge in rhythm
iii. Why a ship floats and a coin sink?
(c)Explain four power losses in a transformer
