Abstract
Now a day’s many automobile companies are working on projects in the field of vehicular
intelligence. They are working in the direction of providing the relevant information about the
potholes on the roads to the [GVMC]. In this paper, we propose an Arduino based module used for
Pothole Detection and sending its location to [GVMC] which assists the information to avoiding
potholes on the roads by giving its location to [GVMC]. The system consists of ultra-sonic sensors
placed on the front part of the vehicle and bottom of the vehicle for broadcasting data, which alerts
the system and sending its location and raising an alarm and displaying the distance on the display,
avoiding any major damages or accidents. By providing the information to [GVMC]. The roads are
maintained and reduce the future accidents

1. Introduction
Potholes are essentially areas of the road's surface that have burst, worn away, or eventually
formed a hole. Potholes cause instability while driving, which may eventually result in a collision. Over
speed driving while inebriated, jumping traffic signals, as well as humps, velocity breakers, and
potholes, can all cause accidents. The solution to this problem must be constructed in such a way
that traffic flows in a methodical and safe manner on Indian highways. This can be achieved by
showing the data to the driver and sending its location to [GVMC]. To obtain this, an Arduino primarily
based module is used for Pothole Detection and caution device which assists the driving force in
fending off potholes at the roads via giving prior warnings.
Methodologies
The Arduino IDE is an essential tool for building and programming automation vehicles.
Its simplicity, versatility, and community support make it. By leveraging Arduino IDE, you
can create innovative and functional automation systems, paving the way for
advancements in technology and education.
Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SR04) Measures the depth of the pothole by calculating the
distance from the sensor to the road surface.
Wheels Provides mobility to the car so that it can move around and detect potholes.
DC 12V Centre Shaft Motors Drives, the wheels to move the vehicle forward and
backward. Depending on load and gear ratio (typically 60-100 RPM)
Servo Motor Controls steering of the car to change its direction when needed.
GSM Module (SIM900) Sends SMS alerts with the pothole information (depth and
coordinates) to the relevant authorities.
GPS Module (Neo-6M) Provides the car's location coordinates (latitude and longitude).
LCD Display (16x2 LCD with I2C) displays the depth of the pothole and other status
messages on the car's operation.
ESP32 CAM Module Captures real-time images of the pothole for documentation and
analysis.
Arduino UNO The microcontroller that acts as the central processing unit for the whole
system. It reads sensor data, processes the information, and controls all components.
HC-05 Bluetooth Module Allows the user to remotely monitor the vehicle's status via
Bluetooth.
L298N Motor Driver Shield Controls the speed and direction of the DC motors based on
the signals from Arduino.
Objectives
The motive behind this project is to detect the potholes which will avoid accidents and
ensure the safety of drivers. The system consists of ultra-sonic sensors placed on the exterior of the
vehicle for broadcasting data, which alerts the driver by raising an alarm and displaying the distance
on the display.
Working Flow:
1. The car moves forward using *DC motors* driven by the *L298N motor driver*.
2. As it moves, the *ultrasonic sensor* detects potholes and measures their depth.
3. The *GPS module* provides the coordinates of the pothole.
4. If a pothole is detected, the car sends an SMS to the authorities with the pothole’s depth and
location using the *GSM module*.
5. The *ESP32 CAM* takes a snapshot of the pothole for reference.
6. All data can be displayed on the *LCD* and can be remotely monitored via the *Bluetooth* module.
This setup gives a solid foundation for building your pothole detection car, which can detect potholes,
calculate their depth, and send relevant information to the authorities.
Description
1. Simulation Process:
Pothole Detection Using the Ultrasonic Sensor
The ultrasonic sensor measures the road surface distance.
If a depression (pothole) is detected based on the threshold, the microcontroller triggers an alert.
2. Location Transmission Using GSM:
The GSM module sends the GPS location of the detected pothole to a central server or a mobile
device. This step remains unchanged.
3. Live Video Streaming with ESP32-CAM:
The ESP32-CAM continues to provide live road monitoring through a Wi-Fi connection. Users can
access the live feed for visual confirmation of road conditions.
Testing Scenarios in Simulation with Relay and LEDs
4. Multiple Potholes:
The LEDs and relay respond dynamically to each detection.
GSM continuously transmits location data for each pothole, with real-time video showing consecutive
detections.
Circuit Design and Connections
5. GSM Module and ESP32-CAM:
Connected as per their respective communication protocols (UART for GSM, Wi-Fi for ESP32-CAM).
Expected Outcomes
6. Live Video and Network Tools:
Test ESP32-CAM’s live streaming capabilities through a Wi-Fi network.
Advantages of Adding Relay and LED Lights
Immediate Visual Feedback: The LEDs provide a quick understanding of system status without
additional monitoring.
Integration with External Alerts: The relay allows activation of warning systems, making the project
more practical for real-world use.
Enhanced Simulation Realism: The LED and relay integration demonstrate how the system can
respond in a real-world environment.
This enhanced simulation demonstrates a comprehensive and realistic prototype of the automatic
pothole detection system, showcasing its capability for real-time detection, reporting, and alerting.
CONCLUSION
The smart car model designed and implemented successfully demonstrates a robust
solution for real-time pothole detection, obstacle avoidance, and road condition monitoring. By
integrating ultrasonic sensors, GSM, GPS, and an ESP32-CAM module.
