HAND (BOTH MITTENS)
Continue to top of mitten as follows:
Rnds 2-8: Knit around.
Rnd 9: Purl around.
Rnds 10-17: Knit around.
Rnd 18: Purl around.
MITTEN TOP
Shape mitten top with decreases. Place a marker at
each side with 12 sts between markers.
Work as follows:
Rnds 1-3: Knit around.
Rnd 4: K1, ssk, knit until 3 sts before next marker,
k2tog, k1, slm, k1, ssk, knit until 3 sts before next
marker, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 5: Knit around.
Rnd 6: Work as for Rnd 4.
Rnd 7: Knit around.
Rnd 8: Work as for Rnd 4.
= 12 sts rem. Join the sets of 6 + 6 rem sts with
Kitchener st.
THUMB
Slip the 12 held thumb sts onto larger size needle.
Begin rnd at edge towards center of mitten palm. Pm
for beginning of rnd (BOR) and then knit 8 rnds.
Now decrease to shape top of thumb: Pm on side
opposite BOR marker so there are 6 sts between each
marker.
Rnd 1: Knit around.
Rnd 2: Ssk, knit until 2 sts before next marker, k2tog,
slm, ssk, knit until 2 sts before next marker, k2tog.
Repeat Rnds 1-2 once more = 2+2 sts rem.
Join rem sts with Kitchener st. Cut yarn and draw into
WS; pull tightly to round thumb top.
FINISHING
Turn mittens inside out and loosely stitch lining
inside cuff.
Weave in all ends neatly on WS. Dampen mittens,
preferably from a spray bottle. Gently squeeze out
excess water by rolling mittens in a towel. Lay
mittens flat to dry, patted out to finished
measurements.
