TASK-BASED LEARNING

- The idea of TBL was greatly popularised by N Prabhu


TBL
Goals T: facilitate ss’ lg. learning by engaging them in a
variety of tasks that have a clear outcome
S: communicate with theirs peer to complete a task
T-S role T: choose tasks, monitor ss’ performance and intervene
as necessary
S: communicate with their peers to complete a task
Characteristics of T/L process
T-S interaction T is the input provider, provides feedback such as
recasts
S work closely together to help each other accomplish
the task and to problem-solve
Feelings of SS SS are motivated by doing tasks that people them for
the real world
View of lang./culture -Language: lg is for communicating and for “doing”
-Culture: not explicitly dealt with
Areas of lang./lang. skill -areas of lang.: the meaning dimension of lg is
emphasized

Focus on
*Techniques: info-gap task, opinion-gap task, reasoning-gap task,
unfocused tasks, focused tasks, input-providing tasks
-3 basic stages:
+ In the Pre-task: T explores the topic, may highlight useful words and
phrases, helping ss to understand the task instructions
S may hear a recording of other people soing the same
task
+Task-cycle: T monitors from the distance
S perform the task in pairs or small groups, then plan how they
will tell the class what they did and how it went, then report on the task either
orally or in writing and/or compare notes on what has happened
+Language focus: T may conduct some form of practice of specific lg.
features which the task has provoked
S examine and discuss specific features of any listening or
reading text which they have looked at for the task
