What is the mood of the ad?

General Ambience of the ad. How has it been done?


Use of color, font, and various other devices.
Relationship between the pictorial aspect and the written material. How do the visual aspect and
the text work together to create impact?
Is there a lot of white space? Lots of graphic elements? Lots of text?
Different signs and symbols of an ad
Figures that are depicted in an act. Age, sex, social position, occupation, ethnicity.
If there are multiple people in the ad, explore the dynamics of the relationship
Theme in the ad: when there are multiple characters in the ad, you would see a story unfold.
Emotions will be developed
Language: aristotelian triad in order to persuade the audience to buy the product. Humour, irony,
satire
Typeface: Font family , design of letters numbers and symbols
Demographics: What is being advertised? Why will this help to sell that particular product?
Where and when will all this appear
Who is the ad aimed at?
Terms that can be used to describe an ad

Lines of appeal
- A happy family: the kind of family that people want to be in
- Rich luxurious lifestyle that everyone want
- Fantasies, dreams
- Glamorous, exotic places
- Successful romance, love
- Nature
- Good looking people: Most of men will have 6 packs, beautiful women
- Lots of childhood images→ helps to build up to that nostalgia and memory

Stereotypes: can become a very effective way of communicating related to people very quickly
Most common stereotypes in advertising are the gender stereotypes
- Fashionable for women
- Maternal and lovable grandmother
- Homely gentle beauty
- Alpha females
- Perfect mother
Rule of third:
Divide a frame or a short into 9 parts, horizontally and vertically. If you place a photograph at the
interactions of these line. It looks more balanced(makes you take notice)
Take the photo of interest in the ad and how the rule of third has been used to depict that
