Fundamentals of Individual Behavior
Each of us has a good
deal of knowledge about
human behavior acquired
through personal
experiences. But the
universal truth is that
every human being watches
and behaves accordingly
to varied experiences.
This helps us in
understanding and even
predicting the behavior

Meaning of Personality
The word personality in English is derived
from the Latin word persona. Originally, it
denoted the masks worn by theatrical
players in ancient Greek dramas.
Personality may be understood as the
characteristic patterns of behaviour and
modes of thinking that determine a person’s
adjustment to the environment.
Thus, personality represents the sum total
of several attributes which manifest
themselves in an individual; the ability of
the individual to organize and integrate
all the qualities so as to give meaning to
life and the uniqueness of the situation
which influences behaviour of an
individual. Personality is therefore, a
very diverse psychological concept.

Types of Personality
According to Jung, the psyche is an apparatus for
adaptation and orientation, and consists of a number of
different psychic functions. Among these he distinguishes
four basic functions:
•sensation—perception by means of immediate
apprehension of the visible relationship between subject
and object
•intuition—perception of processes in the background;
e.g. unconscious drives and/or motivations of other people
•thinking—function of intellectual cognition; the forming of
logical conclusions
•feeling—function of subjective estimation, value oriented
thinking

Psychoanalytic Theory
Psychoanalytic theory is the theory of personality
organization and the dynamics of personality development
relating to the practice of psychoanalysis, a clinical method
for treating psychopathology. First laid out by Sigmund
Freud in the late 19th century. This work has
revealed that, mental processes about which
people are unaware have all important
impact on thinking and actions
Freud's model the psyche consists of three different
elements, the id, ego, and the superego.

The MBTI is a popular instrument used to
assess personality types. It is widely used
in selection process. As many as two
million people are reported to be taking it
each year in the U.S. Research suggest that
the MBTI is a very useful method for
determining communication styles and
interaction preferences. In terms of
personality attributes, however, doubts
exist about the validity and the stability
of the instrument.

Learning
Learning involves change: a change may be
for good or bad. Change may not be evident
until a situation arises in which the new
behavior can occur. Learning is not always
reflected in performance

Theories of Learning
While definitions may vary, learning is
often thought of as a relatively permanent
change in behavior due to experience. It is
influenced by various biological, cultural,
social, and emotional variables.
Several different theories have emerged to
explain how people learn. Some of the main
theories of learning include:
•Behavioral learning theory
•Cognitive learning theory
•Constructivist learning theory
•Social learning theory
•Experiential learning theory
This article explores these learning
theories, including how each one explains
the learning process.
