Roles and Responsibilities of Production
Head (SMS & CCM)
1. Introduction
The Production Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling all
production activities in SMS and CCM, ensuring the achievement of production targets with
quality, safety, and cost efficiency..
2. Key Responsibilities
2.1 Production Planning & Scheduling
- Develop daily, weekly, and monthly production plans.
- Coordinate raw material availability with stores and purchase teams.
- Optimize production sequence to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
2.2 Operations Control
- Supervise furnace & CCM
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Minimize breakdowns and production interruptions.
2.3 Quality Assurance
- Monitor and maintain chemical composition of steel as per grade (e.g., Fe500, Fe500D).
- Coordinate with QC team for heat analysis and rolling parameters.
- Take corrective action on deviations from quality standards.
2.4 Safety & Compliance
- Implement and monitor safety procedures for all production activities.
- Conduct safety toolbox talks and audits.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and environmental norms.
2.5 Cost Optimization
- Control power consumption (kWh/Ton) and work to reduce it.
- Optimize charge mix (scrap, sponge iron, pig iron) for cost efficiency.
- Minimize rework, rejection, and process losses.
2.6 Maintenance Coordination
- Schedule preventive maintenance in coordination with the maintenance team.
- Minimize equipment breakdowns and improve machine availability.
2.7 Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly production reports.
- Track yield, energy consumption, and downtime.
- Maintain proper documentation for audits and certifications.
2.9 Coordination with Other Departments
- Work closely with purchase, stores, sales, and finance teams.
- Support R&D in new product development.
- Coordinate with HR for manpower planning and training.
2.10 Emergency Handling
- Handle furnace trips, CCM breakout .
- Take quick decisions to reduce downtime and material losses.
3. Daily Tasks
- Check raw material stock and arrange for replenishment if required.
- Verify furnace start-up and lining condition.
- Monitor heat-wise tapping time and temperatures.
- Review CCM readiness and water cooling system.
- Track rolling mill pass schedule and production speed.
- Review energy consumption and heat delays.
- Check lab test reports for C, Mn, Si, P, S levels.
- Conduct shift meetings and assign manpower.
- Ensure safety compliance at all points.
4. Weekly & Monthly Tasks
- Review production performance against targets.
- Analyze power and fuel consumption trends.
- Check refractory lining life and plan relining if needed.
- Conduct safety audits and training sessions.
- Review maintenance schedule compliance.
- Prepare monthly production summary for management.
5. Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Production achievement (%) vs target.
- Yield percentage.
- Power consumption (kWh/Ton).
- Downtime hours.
- Rejection and rework rate.
- Safety incidents.
6. Reporting Format
- Daily Production Report (Heat-wise, CCM, Rolling Mill).
- Weekly Summary Report.
- Monthly Consolidated Report (Production, Power, Yield, Losses)
Daily Checklist
- ✔ Raw material stock (scrap, sponge, pig iron, ferro alloys).
- ✔ Furnace lining and start-up status.
- ✔ Heat tapping schedule and temperatures.
- ✔ CCM readiness and strand condition.
- ✔ Power consumption and load management.
