- Known for his natural philosophy, logic, & political theory
- Founder of Lyceum (hall of lectors // institute based in Athens, Greece)

Happiness to Aristotle

- “Happiness depends on ourselves”


- Central purpose of human life & a goal in itself
- Depends on the cultivation of virtue
- Genuinely happy life required the fulfillment of a broad range of
conditions (physical & mental)

Happiness as the Ultimate Purpose of Human Existence

- An end that encompasses the totality of one’s life


- Not something that can be gained/lost in a few hours
- Ultimate value of your life as lived up to these moments

Aristotle’s view of good life

- The act if the soul in accordance w/ virtue


-believed that good for humans is the maximum realization of
what was unique to humans
-the task of reason was to teach humans how to act virtuously,
and the exercise faculties in accordance w/ virtue

- Virtue then, being of 2 kinds:


-intellectual – main owes its birth & growth in teaching
-moral – comes about as a result of habit
