1. A simple beam of length, L = 20 m, supports a uniformly distributed load (UDL)
with the intensity of 2.5 N/m and a concentrated load of 15 N (see Figure 1). The
width and depth of the beam cross section are 10 cm and 25 cm, respectively. By
assuming that the UDL includes the self-weight of the beam and the system is
under equilibrium:
a. Draw the free body diagram
b. Determine the reactions at the supports
c. Draw the shear force diagram
d. Draw the bending moment diagram
e. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses, in the beam due
to bending.
