Assignment/Tutorial 2
Unit 1: Design of Machine Elements
1. How Grey, White and Spheroidal/Ductile cast iron are designated? Self-study
2. How carbon steels and alloy steels are designated?
3. How aluminium alloys are designated? Self-Study
4. What are the advantages of aluminum alloys from design considerations?
5. What are the advantages of composite materials from design considerations?
6. Name some important applications of alloy steels.
7. Write effects of major alloying elements (e.g. Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, Mo and W) of the
alloy steels
8. Write the constituents and use of following materials: 40Cr13Mo10V2,
35Mn6Mo3, 25C12S14, 20C12Pb15, X15Cr25Ni12,
9. Describe material selection procedure using Ashby’s bubble diagrams.
10 Spring come in many shapes and have many purposes. Regardless of their
shape or use, find the best material for a spring of minimum volume. If
weight, rather than volume, matters then suggest the best material.
11. A light-weight table is to be designed with a flat sheet of toughened glass
supported on slender, un-braced, cylindrical legs. The legs must be solid (to
make them thin) and as light as possible to make the table easier to move.
They must support the table top and whatever is placed upon it without
buckling. What materials could one recommend?
12. It is required to standardize load-carrying capacities of dumpers in a
manufacturing unit. The maximum and minimum capacities of such dumpers
are 40 and 630 kN, respectively. The company is interested in developing
seven models in this range. Specify their load-carrying capacities.
13 It is required to standardize 11 speeds from 72 to 720 rpm for a machine tool.
Specify the speeds.
14 Write AISI/SAE method of designation of steels and stainless steels. Take
some steels as per BIS designation and find equivalent designation as per Self-study
AISI/SAE. Explain the method of getting equivalent designation.
