Glass
Properties of Glass
• It is brittle,hard,transparent.
• Chemical Resistance: Glass is resistant to many chemicals, making it
useful
• Melting Point: Glass melts at high temperatures, typically between 1400°C
and 1600°C depending on its composition.
• Thermal Insulation: Glass can act as an insulator against heat
• Non-porous: Glass does not have pores, so it doesn’t absorb liquids and is
easy to clean.
• Color and Texture: Glass can be manufactured in various colors and
textures, including clear, frosted, tinted, and patterned.
• Acoustic Properties: Glass can transmit sound and is used in applications
where sound insulation or acoustic properties are required.

Types Of Glass
Glass comes in a variety of types, each tailored for specific uses based on its properties. Here are
some common types of glass and their characteristics:
1. Soda-Lime Glass:
• Composition: Made from silica (sand), soda (sodium carbonate), and lime (calcium oxide).
• Properties: It’s the most common type of glass, used for windows, bottles, and jars. It’s relatively
inexpensive and easy to manufacture.
• Applications: Containers, flat glass (windows), and everyday glassware.
2. Borosilicate Glass:
• Composition: Contains silica and boron trioxide, making it more resistant to thermal shock.
• Properties: Known for its thermal resistance and low thermal expansion. It remains stable at high
temperatures and does not crack easily under thermal stress.
• Applications: Laboratory glassware (e.g., beakers, test tubes), kitchenware (e.g., Pyrex), and some
types of lighting.
[Link] Glass (Toughened Glass):
• Composition: Made by heating and then rapidly cooling the glass to
increase its strength.
• Properties: Much stronger than standard glass and shatters into small,
blunt pieces rather than sharp shards when broken.
• Applications: Safety glass for windows, shower doors, and glass doors.
[Link] Glass (Crystal Glass):
• Composition: Contains lead oxide, which increases its refractive index and
density.
• Properties: Has a higher light refraction and brilliance compared to
standard glass, often used for decorative purposes.
• Applications: Fine glassware, chandeliers, and decorative objects.
Glass Cladding
• Glass cladding is a modern architectural technique where glass panels
are used to cover the exterior surfaces of buildings.
• Characteristics of glass cladding.
• It is totally safe.
• It is aesthetically and recyclable.
• There is no flaws of plaster and paint.
• It has attractive colours.
• It is energy saver and time saver as per the constructional aspect is concerned.
• Advantages of Glass Cladding
• Uses of glass in construction work adds beauty to the building
• Using glass in interior of the building saves the space inside building
• Glass is an excellent material for thermal insulatation, water proofing.
• Disadvantages of Glass Cladding
• It is very costly and may increase the budget cost of construction work.
• Its use in hilly area and desert may causes more maintenance cost.
• It is also unsafe for earthquake proven area.
