Why don’t we start by you telling us a little bit about yourself?

Hello Everyone. I am Sanjay Deb Sajib. Goor Morning. Currently I am working in the Central Bank of
Bangladesh for around 7 years. As per of the HR policy of the Bangaldesh Bank I have to work in different
departments mainly Monetary Policy and Statistics Department. In those departments my role was dealing with
data coming from diverse sector of the economy and to work as a part of the research team. Based on
the analysis and research the Bank formulates the monetary policy.
Before Joining the Central Bank I studied BBA and MBA in Finance and Banking from Shahjalal
University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh.
Why PHD?
Most of the departments in Bangladesh Bank has a research wing and people who wanted to be part of the policy making
requires strong skills in Research. As most of the policy making has been done by the research wing of the respective
department. In addition, there is hardly any person in the leadership position who does not have a PHD degree. So to
progress in my career and to better equip the research skill I need to have a PHD. Although it is not a written policy but it is
implied that If I want to be in a leadership position I need to have strong research skill and a PHD degree.
Why Data Science.. Why not a Finance PHD?
Firstly, As I mentioned in my SOP the newly appointed governor of Bangladesh Bank in a
recent seminar has emphasized on the importance of Data science in the Banking areana and
urged us the next generation to dig deep and research in this field. Though it is still a young
field in the Banking Industry of Bangladesh but Bangladesh Bank is planning to create a big
data environment in the financial sector of the Bangladesh within the next 5-7 years. As a part
of this Bangladesh Bank has already started some pilot projects such as to monitor their
monetary policy transmission using Big Data to support their economic analysis needs. Thus
to cope up with the forthcoming change I need to enhance my research and technical
knowledge by doing a Data Science PHD.
Secondly, Data is considered as the new fuel worldwide. The amount of data generated every
day from varied sources becomes an invaluable source of insights when analyzed with the use
of technology. Thus, doing a PHD degree in Data Science will open up the door for me to
explore this area of my interest.
On the other hand, I already have foundational knowledge on Finance as I have done my
bachelor and masters on Finance and Banking. Besides
Why NJIT?
There are several reasons that persuade me to apply at NJIT
Firstly, I would say that NJIT is a prominent business school in USA and its strong reputation as an
eminent research laden institution and its proximity to world’s largest financial center "New York"
make it a truly great place for a research aspirant of Data Science.
Secondly, I went through the profiles of the faculty members and I found Dr. Dantong Yu, Dr. Ming
Taylor, and Dr. Ajim Uddin research interest aligns with mine which is another reason I decided to
apply at this program.
Thirdly, this program curriculum is quite unique in Structure as it combines business knowledge with
advanced data science techniques.
I believe, The Busines Data Science program at NJIT will help me to reach my career goal
What is your career goal after PhD?
As per my plan, after successful completion, I will dedicate my efforts to adapting prudent
central banking policies using the knowledge and skills I gathered from the program. I will
also focus on real-time, evidence-based policymaking formulation, which requires authorities
to rely on better analytical and forecasting capacities to support their decisions. Overall I
want to be a part of the transition phase of the Financial Sector of the Bangladesh as a Leader
and develop in-house knowledge and reduce reliance on external services providers.
Moreover, I will also conduct my research activity to uplifting the living standard of people
with the expansion of knowledge in my areas of interest.

Any Research Experience?
During my time at university, I involved myself in every way possible in departmental
research activities to better understand the complexities on the financial system and its
interdependencies. My first exposure to research was in my undergraduate studies when I
volunteered for a role in data entry to assist Professor Dr. Mohammad Ashraful Ferdous
Chowdhury in his research. During my MBA program, I work with him on a research project.
In this project, we analyzed the impact of institutional quality on bank risk-taking behaviors
using bank holding companies and commercial banks of 19 emerging countries from 2011–
2016. Using pooled panel and Dynamic GMM estimation we evaluate the impact of good
governance on bank risk-taking, measured by Z-score. In this project my role was collecting
data from Bankscope and designing conceptual framework along with writing the literature.
The final paper - "Revisiting the impact of institutional quality on post-GFC bank risk-taking:
Evidence from emerging countries" was published in the Emerging Market Review Journal.
However immediately after my MBA, I joined Bangladesh Bank and due to job
pressure I couldn’t continue my research activity. But I am quite enthusiastic about research
and was part of several quarterly and half yearly publication of the central Bank. In these
publications, we basically try to exhibit the thematic relationships between the movement of
financial indicators and their corresponding stability implications in the real economy. In
those publications my role was analyzing data and present it through graph and charts.
