SAT Grammar: Modifiers
What Is a Modifier?
A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that describes or gives more information about another word in the
sentence.
Examples of modifiers:
• Adjectives: blue car, angry cat
• Adverbs: runs quickly, spoke loudly
• Phrases or clauses: Running down the street, the boy tripped.
Key SAT Concepts Involving Modifiers
1. Modifiers Must Be Placed Correctly
A modifier must be next to the word it modifies. If it's too far away or placed incorrectly, it causes confusion or
changes the meaning.
Incorrect (Dangling Modifier):
Running late to class, the backpack was grabbed quickly.
(✘ The backpack wasn't running late!)
Correct:
Running late to class, the student grabbed the backpack quickly.
2. Avoid Misplaced Modifiers
A misplaced modifier is in the wrong spot, making the sentence unclear or unintentionally funny.
Incorrect:
She served sandwiches to the children on paper plates.
(✘ Are the children on the plates?)
Correct:
She served sandwiches on paper plates to the children.
3. Dangling Modifiers
Occurs when the subject that the modifier is supposed to describe is missing from the sentence.
Incorrect:
Walking through the park, the flowers were beautiful.
(✘ Flowers don’t walk.)
Correct:
Walking through the park, we saw beautiful flowers.
4. Stacked Modifiers
Multiple adjectives or modifiers in a row should appear in a logical, standard order:
1. Quantity
2. Opinion
3. Size
4. Age
5. Shape
6. Color
7. Origin
8. Material
9. Purpose
Correct:
Three beautiful large old round red Spanish leather riding boots
5. Modifiers in Comparative/Superlative Structures
Be careful with modifiers in comparison:
Correct:
Of the two, she is the more talented musician.
He is the fastest runner on the team.
6. Only, Just, Even, Almost — Watch Placement!
These words can significantly change the meaning based on where they are placed.
Compare:
• Only she said she loved him. (No one else said it)
• She only said she loved him. (She said it but didn’t mean it)
• She said she only loved him. (She didn’t love anyone else)

SAT Strategy Tips
• Identify who or what the modifier is describing.
• Check if the noun being modified is clearly and logically stated.
• Move misplaced modifiers closer to the word they describe.
