System
System Software
A program that manages and

supports the resources and

operations of a computer system.

Controls the internal computer

operations.

Example: Operating System


Introduction to
Operating System
A software which acts as an interface

between the user and the computer.

An important component that controls all

other components of the computer system.

Without operating system, a computer will

not work.

Example: Windows, UNIX, Macos,etc.


Booting
A process that starts the operating system when the user
turns on a computer.
A self-starting process.

Types of Booting
Warm Booting Cold Booting
Press Restart button while Press Power button while
computer is already on. computer is switched off.
Functions of an Operating System
Process Management
An operating system controls and schedules the processes for
execution by the CPU.
Device Management
An important function of OS.
It coordinates and controls the various input and output
devices attached to the system.
Memory Management
whenever you start any application software, it gets loaded

onto the system memory.

This is done by OS.

File Management
A lot of data is stored on the hard disk.

Housekeeping
Includes all the services necessary to ensure the smooth operation

of computer system like security, protection, resource accounting

and back up,etc.
