COMMUNICATION
The process of conveying news,
exchanging ideas, or imparting
feelings, using agreed upon method
by word of mouth.
PROCESS
OF
COMMUNICATION
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 01
The process begins with the presence of a
stimulus brought about by the occurrence
of an idea, a news, a remark or a situation
that activate the senses of the speaker
categorized as the sender.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 02
The brain receives the idea through the
participation of tiny nerve fibers working as
delivery agents.
Eventually, the brain identifies and evaluates
the idea which may trigger the person to react.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 03
The ideas and thoughts are encoded into
language symbols or words known and
understood by both speaker and listener.
The common language is very important to
assure success in the process.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 04
The speaker is now ready to externalize his thoughts
to the listener, as well as, to the surrounding
environment.
This time, the sender makes use of his voice, touch,
physical presence, body movements, facial
expression and other channels available.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 05
To transmit the message, the speech sounds should be
uttered in logically arranged sequence.
Sound waves are produced in the air and the muscles of
the speech organs are tightened or relaxed depending on
the required condition.
This may allow the spontaneous occurrence of hand
movements.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
STAGE 06
The message is brought by the sound waves
and movements of the speaker are seen by the
listener.
The listener senses what is going on because
he visualizes it and his auditory nerves are
activated.
Elements of Communication
Message
Sender/ Feedback
Receiver
Channel
Noise Setting
SENDER/ RECEIVER
The person/s involve in the
conversation.
When people start talking or sharing
ideas, insights, information,
experiences, emotions or opinions, the
communication process begins
MESSAGE
All ideas, information, emotions, insights or
experiences shared by the communicator are
his messages.
These may be verbal (using words) or non-
verbal (using gestures ).
This is the most vital element in
communication.
CHANNEL
It is the route travelled by the message
between the sender to the receiver.
Channels are also the writing, using the
phone, using gadgets, listening over the
radio, watching television, recording ideas,
reading newspaper and magazines.
FEEDBACK
It is the reaction observed in both
the sender and the receiver.
It will determine whether the
message is understood or not.
FEEDBACK
They may come as simple gestures like a
nod, a smile, a frown, a body movement.
The best feedback is an oral response so
as to avoid misinterpretation .
NOISE
It is the presence of a disturbing factor
that may lead to a misunderstanding of
the message.
Noise may vary.
NOISE
There is physical noise which may
come from loud sounds that alter the
transfer of message.
There is the psychological noise,
occurring in the minds of both sender
and receiver
SETTING
It is the venue of the communication.
Formal settings require decency in
presentations, while informal ones may not.
They may vary from the way a place is
lighted to the colors of the decoration.
The furniture may also affect such situation.
FUNCTIONS
OF
COMMUNICATION
FUNCTIONS
#1 REGULATION/ CONTROL
#2 SOCIAL INTERACTION
#3 MOTIVATION
#4 INFORMATION
#5 EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
REGULATION
AND CONTROL
People use communication
to maintain control over
other people’s attitude and
behavior.
SOCIAL
INTERACTION
Communication helps us
start, maintain, regulate, or
even end relationships
with other people.
MOTIVATION
We communicate to entice and direct
people to act and reach their objectives
or goals in life.
In the process, we use positive language
to make them realize that their actions
lead them to something
beneficial for their being.
INFORMATION
We want to inform other people of
what we know
– facts, information, and knowledge.
Most of our speaking activities are directed
to get and give information to develop or
improve our knowledge and skills.
EMOTIONAL
EXPRESSION
Communication is curative and serves to
maintain good health.
Sometimes, talking to a person does not
mean asking for his help; we talk to another
person merely to vent our feelings.
After we talk we find ourselves in a much
better condition.
