Explain the meaning of the statement “The specific heat capacity of a
substance is 10 J/kg/°C.”:
Heat Transfer Processes
Heat can be transferred in three ways:
(a) Conduction: Transfer of heat through solids, without movement of the material as a whole.
Heat energy moves by vibrations and collisions of particles.
● Examples:
○ Warming hands by touching a hot cup.
○ Heat transfer through the walls and roof of a house.
○ Cooking using a metal pan on a stove.
(b) Convection: Transfer of heat in fluids (liquids and gases) due to the actual movement of
fluid particles. Warm, less dense fluid rises, and cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a circulation.
● Examples:
○ Rising smoke and flame from a candle.
○ Boiling water (hot water rises, cooler water sinks).
○ Sea breeze and land breeze.
○ Circulation of warm and cool air in a room with a heater or AC.
(c) Radiation: Transfer of heat by electromagnetic (EM) waves. It does not require a medium
and can travel through a vacuum.
● Examples:
○ Heat from the Sun reaching the Earth.
○ Feeling warmth from a bonfire.
○ Microwaves heating food.
○ Medical uses like X-rays, gamma rays (radiotherapy, chemotherapy).
Effect of Convection on Rain
● Convection plays a key role in rain formation.
● When the surface of the Earth is heated by the Sun, the warm, moist air rises due to
convection.
● As the air rises, it expands, cools, and the water vapor condenses into clouds.
● When condensation continues and droplets combine, they become heavy and fall as
rain.
● So, convection helps carry water vapor upward, forming clouds and eventually leading
to rainfall.
Effect of Convection on Climate Change
● Atmospheric convection influences climate patterns worldwide.
● Rising warm air and sinking cool air create wind circulation and ocean currents, which
redistribute heat across the planet.
● However, with global warming, stronger heating at the surface leads to:
○ More intense convection → heavier rainfall and stronger storms.
○ Changing wind patterns → droughts in some areas, floods in others.
○ Melting ice + ocean convection changes → disruption of ocean currents,
affecting global climate stability.
