Epic Beginning
The Doctorless River

A mother gave her infant son a toffee wrapped in a shiny plastic cover. After savoring
the sweet, the child began to lick the wrapper.
“Would you eat that too?” the mother scolded gently. “It is dangerous. You could fall
ill. And then who would take you to the doctor?”
She took the wrapper from his tiny hands and, without much thought, tossed it into the
nearby river.
That night, the infant stirred in his sleep and whispered to his mother,
“The wrapper you threw. . . a baby fish swallowed it. She is sick now. Her mother wants
to take her to the doctor, but they have no doctors. No hospitals.”
