Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity (DEZG-641)

Date: 25/4/2025 Assignment -2 (Regular, Open book) (25 marks)

Instructions:
1. There are four problems specified. Students are requested to choose any one of the
following problems and apply theory of elasticity methods to industrial scale
problems.
2. If the industrial problem of your choice is not falling in these specified problems,
you are free to choose your own problem.

1. Identify any rotating component in your industry which is experiencing torsion type
loading. Answer the following questions
a. What are the geometric dimensions? Is 1D case valid for this component?
b. Write down the cross-sectional parameters and material parameters.
c. What type of stress functions can be used?
d. Suppose a torque of (500*highest numerical digit of your roll number) Nm is applied
on this component, determine shear stresses. (Use stress function approach)
e. How do you determine the angle of twist for this
component?
(Assume whatever necessary)

2. Assume that you want to replace certain component in

your industry by a light weight material such as
composite material. For example, the platform shown in
this figure originally made of steel can be replaced by a
CFRP composite.
a. Identify any one component in your industry and
comment on why you want to replace it.
b. Assume the problem in 3D. Identify the type of loads acting on it and find the 3D
strain field acting on it.
c. Calculate 3D stress state and comment on the change of stress state from steel to
composites?
d. Also apply failure criteria known to you and justify whether the replacement
provides any advantage.
(Assume whatever necessary)
3. Identify any component in the industry which is experiencing internal or external
pressure. Answer the following questions
a. What are the geometric dimensions? Is 1D case valid for this component?
b. Can this structure be treated as cylinder? Write down the cross-sectional
parameters and material parameters.
c. What type of stress functions can be used?
d. Suppose an internal pressure of (500*highest numerical digit of your roll number)
N/m2 is acting on it, determine the stress field. (Assume whatever necessary)

4. Identify any component in the industry which is experiencing only bending type of loads.
Answer the following questions
a. What are the geometric dimensions? Is 1D case valid for this component?
b. Is pure bending assumption is valid for this case?
c. What is the material behavior of the material that the component is made of?
d. If the material is considered as elastic-plastic, determine about what percentage of
dimensions of this component are yielded? (Assume whatever necessary)
