ACCT – 059 PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF TEACHING ACCOUNTING

JANUARY 22, 2025

UNDERSTANDING TEACHING.
 Acero, [Link], (2000) – teaching is organized, purposeful (goal), and deliberate efforts designed to bring
about certain desirable ends in an individual.
 Teaching is imparting knowledge (learning).
 Teaching is communicating a message with impact on audience (changing their aspects, views and
principles).
 Making learners understand the things you want them to know.
 Making connections with the subject matter and real-world experiences.

OVERVIEW: TEACHING PROFESSION.

 “Teacher” – noble profession
 They produce something significant and moving.
 It is the oldest of all learned profession known in the civilization.
 Democracy – freedom to develop your own methods in teaching.
 Acero, Javier, Castor (2007) – teaching is:
1. An occupation
2. Myriad of activities (myriad = marami)
3. Act itself
4. Process or set of action

TEACHING FOR UNDERSTANDING FRAMEWORK (TfU).

 4 cornerstones/elements of pedagogy by David Perkins
 The pedagogy is adopted by Blythe and Associations (1989)
 It is a set of general guidelines on how to plan, instruct…
 It provides “optimal ambiguity”
 This framework focuses on the students.
 The TfU contains rules and standards to follow.
 It focuses on all grade levels.

4 CORNERSTONES/ELEMENTS OF PEDAGOGY.
 TfU should be flexible. (can be used in any subject/grade level)
 “optimal ambiguity” – ability to take alternative set of plan.

1. Generative Topics
o What to aim? What things to understand? How to know the feedback?
o It answers the following questions:
i. What to teach?
ii. What is worth understanding?
iii. How to teach for understanding?
iv. How students will develop deeper understanding?
o Choosing a topic – most challenging
o Topics should be issues, themes, concepts and ideas that provide adequate depth and etc. to
nurture students development.
o According to Perkins and Blythe (2009), generative topics are:
i. Central to one or more domains
 Choose the best topic
 Topics must be issues appropriate to the subject
ii. Interesting to students
 Topics to be discussed should be according to the student’s age, environment,
culture.
 Teachers are responsible for making topics interesting to students.
iii. Interesting to teachers
 Teaching is a delivered effort
 Teachers should also be interested in the topic they are going to teach.
iv. Accessible
 Information about the topics to be discussed by the teachers should be accessible.
v. Opportunities for multiple connections
 Topics to be discussed should be relatable to students.
 The teacher is responsible for making connections between his/her lessons and
students.
Planning Generative Topics
1. Brainstorming
 Look for different ideas
 Consider what interests the teacher the most.
2. Create idea webs
 “Webbing” – opportunity for the teachers to become adventurous.

A topic has 'opportunities for multiple connections' when it allows students to relate the material to various aspects of their knowledge and experiences. This benefits student learning by enhancing understanding and retention, as students can integrate new information with their existing knowledge base, thereby fostering a more comprehensive and applicable understanding of the subject matter .

Teachers can ensure that topics are interesting to students by aligning them with students' age, environment, and culture, as suggested by David Perkins and Blythe. Teachers must take responsibility for making the topics engaging by facilitating connections to students' personal experiences and making the topics relevant and accessible, thereby nurturing a conducive learning atmosphere .

Choosing a topic is challenging because it involves selecting issues, themes, and ideas that are not only central and relevant to the subject matter but also engaging and accessible to students of different backgrounds and interests. Teachers must ensure these topics provide adequate depth to nurture student development while remaining aligned with educational objectives .

The TfU framework proposes handling the dynamic nature of teaching subjects by integrating 'optimal ambiguity', allowing teachers to adopt alternative plans suited for different educational contexts. This flexibility ensures that teaching is adapted to the specific needs of varying subjects and grade levels, enabling educators to apply general guidelines fluidly in planning and instruction .

'Generative Topics' in the TfU framework consist of key elements such as centrality to one or more domains, relevance and interest to students and teachers, accessibility of information, and opportunities for multiple connections. These elements are crucial as they guide educators in choosing topics that are not only educationally significant but also engaging and relatable to students, fostering deeper understanding and applicability of the taught material .

Brainstorming plays a crucial role in planning generative topics by allowing teachers to explore a wide range of ideas and perspectives. This process is important as it helps educators identify topics that align with both their interests and the educational needs of students, ensuring that the chosen topics are engaging and conducive to deeper learning .

Teaching is considered a noble profession because it is organized, purposeful, and deliberate, aiming to bring about desired outcomes in individuals. The profession is significant as it imparts knowledge, influences beliefs, and creates connections between subject matter and real-world experiences. Moreover, it is depicted as the oldest learned profession essential to civilization, implying its fundamental role in societal development .

'Optimal ambiguity' enhances the learning experience by allowing educators to adopt flexible teaching approaches that cater to diverse educational settings and student needs, fostering critical thinking and adaptability. However, challenges include balancing structure with flexibility, and the requirement for teachers to be well-versed in adaptive teaching methodologies to effectively implement and navigate this ambiguity .

The concept of 'teacher as a communicator' emphasizes the role of teaching in conveying impactful messages that alter students' understanding and perspectives. Effective communication ensures that the knowledge imparted is clear, relatable, and transformative, which is essential for achieving educational goals and fostering a deep, meaningful learning experience .

The teaching profession, regarded as the oldest of all learned professions, has significantly influenced modern education systems by laying the foundational principles of imparting knowledge and shaping societal values. The profession's role in organizing and delivering purposeful education has driven educational reforms and innovations, contributing to the development of democratic and dynamic learning environments .
