Aeration tank:

Flow 100 m3/day

Influent BOD 350 mg/l
MLSS 3000 mg/lt
F/M Ratio 0.1

Total BOD Load = 100 X 350

1000
= 35 Kg/day

Aeration Tank Volume = 35

3 X 0.1
= 98 m2
= 23.42 hrs capacity, which confirms the
standards set for extended Aeration System.

Providing depth of 3.5m,

Surface Area required = 98

3.5
= 28 m2
Hence provide a Tank of Size = 6 m X 5.5 m X (3.5 + 0.4) m SWD

1. Bar Screen Chamber:

Flow: 100 KLD or 4.166M3/hr or 0.07 m3/min

Detention time: 5 min

Volume of the tank = 0.07 X 5 = 0.35 m3

Let SWD be 1.0 m

Therefore, area of tank = 0.35 m2. say 0.5 m2.

Therefore, provide the bar screen chamber of 1.0 X 0.5 X 1.0 m SWD
with bar screen made out of MS flat of 6 mm thick at 10 mm c/c.

2. Oil and Grease Trap

Flow: 100 KLD or 4.166M3/hr or 0.07 m3/min

Detention time: 5 min

Volume of the tank = 0.07 X 5 = 0.35 m3

Let SWD be 0.75 m

Therefore, Area of tank = 0.46 m2

Therefore, provide oil and grease trap of dimension 0.75 X 0.75 X 1.0
m

3. Equalization tank

Average flow = 100 = 4.17 m3 /hr

24
Detention time = 4 hours
Therefore, Volume of tank = 4.17 X 4 = 16.67 m3
Providing the side water depth of 3.5 m,
Area of tank = 1.67 = 4.76 m2
3.5
Hence provide the tank of 3.0 X 2.0 X 3.5 with 0.4 m free board.

Design of Aeration Tank:

Flow (Q): 100 KLD
BOD entering STP (Y0): 350 mg/lt
BOD left in the effluent (YE): 20 mg/lt
MLSS: 3000 mg/lt
F/M: 0.12

Minimum Efficiency required in the activated plant

ηeff = (350 – 20) X 100 = 94%

350

Volume of the Aeration Tank:

F = Q . Y0
M V . Xt

0.12 = 100 X 350

V . 3000

V = 98 m3

Aeration Tank Dimensions :

Assume the Depth = 3.5m

Surface Area = 28 m2

By Hit & Trial

L= 6m B=5.5m

Provide an Aeration tank of size : 6.0 X 5.5 X 3.5 m.

I. Check for aeration period or H.R.T. (t)

t = V . 24h
Q

= 330 X 24
350

= 22.6 hr. say 23hrs.

since t lies between 10 to 25 hr, above period is correct.

II. Volumetric Loading:

= Q . Y0 gm of BOD5/m3 vol. of tank.

V

= 100 X 350 gm/m3

98

= 357 gm/m3
= 0.357 Kg/m3
since it lies between 0.2 – 0.4 hr, above calculation is correct.

III. Return Sludge ratio (for Sludge Volume Index SVI ranging
between 50-150 ml/gm).

QR = __ Xt___
Q 106 - Xt
SVI
Using SVI = 100 ml/gm; and Xt =3000 mg/lt, we have

QR = 0.43;
Q
Take 0.50 i.e. 50% Sludge recirculation

IV. SRT : (θc)

V . Xt = αy . Q. (Y0 – YE). θc
1 + Ke . θc

αy = 1.0
Ke = 0.06

On substitution of the calculated/design values

θc = 20 days
since it should lie between 10 – 25 days, above calculation is
correct.

Hence the calculated Aeration Tank Size : 6.0 X 5.5 X ( 3.5 + 0.4)
m is correct.

Activated Sludge Quantity:

Flow = 100 cu.m/day

It is generally observed that 20% of total volume of flow is
sludge i.e. 20m3/day. Out of this 75% (i.e. 15 m 3/d) is under
re-circulation, so remaining sludge quantity is 5 m3/day.

This sludge will be de-watered by filter press or sludge

drying beds and can be disposed of safely in environment
and used as manure for gardening.

Oxygen requirement:
BOD load = 100 x 350 = 35 kg/day
1000

Considering 1.2 kg of oxygen per kg of BOD5

Therefore, theoretical air requirement = _35 x 1.2

0.21 x 1.2

= 167 m3/day
= 6.94 m3/hr

Considering 25 % oxygen transfer efficiency,

Oxygen transfer co-efficient: =0.6, = 0.7

Actual Oxygen required = 6.94 = 66 m3/hr
(0.6 x 0.7 x 0.25)

Therefore the blower of 66m3/hr capacity at the operating

pressure of 0.5 kg/m2 is required.

4. Lamella clarifier:

Average flow = 100 m3 / day

Consider overflow rate of 15m3/ m2/day

Surface area = 100 = 6.7 m2

15
The height of 2.5 m required for proper settling of sludge.

Dimensions of clarifier = 2.5 m x 2.5 m x 2.5 m

Check for detention time in clarifier:

Volume of the clarifier = 5.625 m3.

Therefore detention time = 5.625 = 4.5 hrs

1.25

5. Clarified Water Tank:

Average flow =1.25 m3/hr

Providing detention time = 3 hrs

Volume of the tank =3.75 m3

Providing SWD 2.0 m

Surface Area = 3.75 = 1.875 m2

2.0

Clarified water tank of size = 2.0m x 1.5m x (2m + 0.5m)

[Link] Sand Filter:

Flow Rate = 1.25 cu.m/hr or 0.021 m3/sec

Detention time = 15 min.
Volume = 0.32 m3.
The actual detention period for waste is half of the above
since half of the portion is filled with Sand.

Volume of the wastewater storage = 0.16 m3. the

remaining portion of the tank is filled with filter media, which
constitutes to 0.16 m3.

Assume Depth = 1.8 m

Surface Area required = 0.2 m2.
On calculation,

Using, A = 3.14 x d2
4
d = 0.5 m

According to the above calculations, standard size available

is given below,

The size of the sand filter required = 0.8 m dia. X 1.8 m ht.

7. Activated Carbon Filter:

Average Flow = 1.25 cu.m/hr or 0.021 m3/sec

Detention time = 15 min.
Volume = 0.32 m3.

The actual detention period for waste is half of the above

since half of the portion is filled with Carbon.

4
d = 0.5 m

According to the above calculations, standard size available

is

The size of the carbon filter required = 0.8 m dia. X 1.8 m ht.

8. Final collection Tank:

Average flow =1.25 cu.m/hr

Providing detention time = 3 hrs

Volume of the tank = 3.75 m3

Providing SWD 2.0 m

Final collection tank of size = 2.0m x 1.5m x (2m + 0.5m)

9. Sludge Drying Bed:

Total flow rate = 30 m3/day

Since It is generally observed that 20% of total volume of

flow is sludge i.e. 6 m3/d. Out of this 75% (i.e. 4.5 m3/d) is
under re-circulation, so remaining sludge quantity is 1.5
3
m /d.

Since the sludge contains 80% of moisture,

Quantity if dried sludge = 1.5 – (1.5 X 0.8)
i.e. = 0.375 m3/day.

Assuming the depth as 0.5m,

Surface area = 0.75m2.

By hit ‘n’ trial, L = 1.5 m
W = 0.5 m

Sludge Drying bed = 2.0 m X 1.0 m X 0.5 m
