Lesson: Adding and subtracting decimals and mixed decimals through ten
thousandths without and with regrouping.
Remember:
Addition and subtraction of decimals is similar to addition and subtraction of
whole numbers. Always start at the rightmost digit towards left. But then, in adding and
subtracting decimals, make sure that all the decimal points are aligned and zero/s may
be used as place holder/s so that all addends (in addition), minuend and subtrahend
(in subtraction) will have the same number of digits to avoid confusion when performing
operations.
We use decimals in our daily life. Decimals can be found in the price of every
commodity- things we buy in each and every store; all unit of measures like distance,
weight, mass, and capacity; and in writing money when we deal with centavos.

Problem #1: Kimberly helped do some chores at home. While she was cleaning
her room, she found four pieces of ribbons that measure 0.5345m, 0.5672m, 0.763m
and 1.003m respectively. How long will be the ribbons when put end to end?
How can we solve the problem?
1. Write the decimal numbers in column.
Align the decimal point. → 0.5345
0.5672
0.763
+ 1.003
2. Annex 0s to complete the decimal places. 0.5345
0.5672
0.7630
+ 1.0030
3. Add the numbers just like adding whole numbers. Point off the decimal point
aligned with those in the addends.
Answer: The total length of the ribbon is 2.8677m.

Answer the following:
1. Find the sum of 4 + 0.2687 +13.5 +0.1234
2. What is the answer when 0.5623, 25.0056,1.23 and 41 are added?
Remember: Do not forget to annex zero/s to complete the decimal places.
Problem #2: Cindy bought 2.6895 kg of chicken meat from a grocery store. She
cooked 1.5kg for lunch. How many kg of chicken were left uncooked?
1. Write the decimal numbers in column. Align the decimal point.
2. Annex 0s to complete the decimal places.
3. Subtract the numbers just like subtracting whole numbers. Aligned the decimal
points.
Answer: 1.1895 kg of chicken left uncooked
Activity 2:
Answer the following:
1. Subtract 3.5673 from 62.58.
2. Find the difference between 25. 0002 and 14. 8942.
Remember: Regrouping is necessary every time the minuend is less than the
subtrahend. Still, make sure all decimal points are aligned and use or annex
zero/s when needed to complete the decimal places.
Mathematical Ideas:
In adding and subtracting decimal numbers, write the numbers in column
and align the decimal points. Annex 0s if needed to complete the decimal
places. Perform the operations just like adding or subtracting whole numbers.
