RCC Design Template (IS 456:2000) — Beam & Column

HOW TO USE
1) Go to 'Beam_IS456' for singly-reinforced rectangular beams:
• Enter fck, fy, breadth b, overall depth h, clear cover, factored moment Mu (kNm) and shear Vu (kN).
• Pick a steel grade (Fe250/Fe415/Fe500). The sheet auto-computes effective depth d, neutral axis depth xu, required Ast, a
• If 'Needs Doubly Reinforced' turns YES, the singly-reinforced assumption is invalid. Use a doubly-reinforced design method
• For shear, input τc from IS 456 Table 19 (based on % tension steel and fck). The sheet computes stirrup spacing and limits.

2) Go to 'Column_Axial_IS456' for short, tied columns under axial load:

• Enter fck, fy, size b×D, clear cover, factored axial load Pu (kN).
• The sheet solves Pu ≤ 0.4 fck (Ag−Asc) + 0.67 fy Asc for Asc, and checks 0.8% ≤ p ≤ 6%.
• It suggests number & diameter of bars and shows tie spacing checks. Includes minimum eccentricity calculation for inform

ASSUMPTIONS & LIMITS

• IS 456:2000 provisions are used in simplified form. Verify all results with your engineering judgement.
• Beams: rectangular, singly reinforced, tension bars only (no compression steel).
• Columns: short columns with ties (not spirals), axial load design (no biaxial bending interaction charts).
• Units: mm, N, MPa (N/mm²), kN. 1 MPa = 1 N/mm².

KEY FORMULAE (concise)

Beam (singly-reinforced):
k = Mu / (b d² fck), with Mu in N·mm, b,d in mm, fck in MPa.
Solve 0.36 fck b d² (x − 0.42 x²) = Mu for x = xu/d.
x = [1 − √(1 − 4×0.42×k/0.36)] / (2×0.42).
Ast = 0.36 fck b xu / (0.87 fy). Check xu ≤ xu,max (IS 456).
Ast,min = 0.85 b d / fy. Bar selection must ≥ Ast, and spacing/detailing per IS 456.
Shear: τv = Vu / (b d). Use τc from Table 19. Vus = Vu − τc b d (in consistent units).
Vertical stirrups: s = 0.87 fy_sv Asv d / Vus (check max spacing ≤ min(0.75d, 300)).

Column (tied):
Pu,lim = 0.4 fck (Ag − Asc) + 0.67 fy Asc. Solve for Asc.
0.8% ≤ p = 100×Asc/Ag ≤ 6%. Min. 4 bars for rectangular; min bar dia and spacing per IS 456.
Minimum eccentricity: e_min = max(L/500 + D/30, 20 mm).
