TUTORIAL: CLASSIFICATION

1. Sieve analysis on a dry soil sample of mass 1000g showed that 980g and 270g of soil pass
through 4.75mm and 0.0075mm sieve respectively. WL and WP of the soil passing through
4.75mm sieve are 40% and 18% respectively. The soil is classified as?
2. A soil mass contains 40% gravel, 50% sand, 10% silt. A soil can be?
3. The result of lab test conducted on two soil samples A and B, classify them.

% passing D10 D60 D30 WL WP

0.075mm 4.75mm
Soil A 14 92 0.14 0.33 1 16 8
Soil B 75 75 - - - 58 14

4. A sieve analysis is done, classify the soil according to following data.

Sieve size % Retained D10 = 1mm

4.75mm 38 D60 = 5mm
0.075mm 90 D30 = 3mm
WL = 50%
WP = 35%

5. Soil has WL = 45% and lies above A line on plasticity chart. It is classified as?
6. Based grain size distribution analysis, D10, D30, D60 values of soils are 0.23mm, 0.3mm and
0.41mm respectively, classify the soil.
7. In soil, 70% particles passing through 4.75mm sieve and 40% particles passing through
0.075mm sieve. Its Cu = 8, CC = 2, classify the soil.
