Monitoring the Immunization System

Catch-Up Immunization

As NIP Manager, on reviewing routine immunization data of Region 4b, you noted that there has been a declining
trend of FIC (31%) in the first 2 two quarters of the current year. Out of the 5 provinces and one city, three, namely
Occidental Mindoro, Romblon, and Puerto Princesa City are contributing to this decline in coverage. Below is their
current accomplishments:

Case Scenarios per province/ group:

Scenario 1: Group 1 and 2: In Occidental Mindoro, there are 47 municipalities with 1 RHU in each. Of the 47
municipalities, 15 have high mobile populations across borders. There is a large migration of workers’ families due
to the shifting of one business factory to another locality in the different provinces.

Scenario 2: Group 3 and 4: In Romblon province, there are 27 municipalities with 1 RHU each. Of the total
municipalities, 10 are islands, while 10 are Geographically Isolated Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) with Indigenous
People having high vaccine hesitancy. During the last 6 months, there have been reports of two outbreaks of
measles in 2 island municipalities and an outbreak of diphtheria in 3 GIDA municipalities

Scenario 3: Group 5, 6 and 7: Puerto Princesa in Palawan is a highly urbanized city that comprises 30 Barangays
with 1 CHO and one 1 BHS per barangay. The clients are more inclined to visit private pediatric centers than
government facilities. Private health facilities implementing routine immunization are reluctant to share their
monthly accomplishment.

Given the above scenarios:

Prepare a plan for the remaining quarters in order to address immunization gaps for your respective/ province/
city? Include strategies that can be used to improve routine immunization.

Facilitator guide:
● Facilitators will be assigned among the divided 3 groups.

● Assign a presenter and a rapport for the exercise.

● Using the provided national template for Catch-up immunization, facilitators support the groups to
develop a plan for the allocated scenario mentioned above.
● For Example, in highly urbanized cities the clients are inclined toward facilities provided by private
hospitals and clinicians which causes a major setback to underreporting and recording the number of
children vaccinated and the absence of collaboration with private sectors. Based on these issues as
managers what will be your activity plan for each given component as part of the catch-up immunization?
● The time given for the group discussion is 45 mins and another 30 mins for the group presentation.

● Use of laptops and flip charts for the group presentation.
