Basic Instrumentation Interview Questions for Freshers
1. What is Instrumentation?
Instrumentation is the science of measurement and control of process variables like temperature,
pressure, flow, and level.
2. What is a Transducer?
A transducer is a device that converts one form of energy into another (e.g., temperature to voltage).
3. Difference between Sensor and Transducer?
A sensor detects changes, and a transducer converts them into electrical signals. All sensors are
transducers.
4. What is Signal Conditioning?
Signal conditioning is processing a signal (e.g., amplification, filtering) to make it suitable for
analysis.
5. What is Calibration?
Calibration is adjusting instruments to match standard measurements for accuracy.
6. Define Analog and Digital Signals.
Analog signals are continuous, while digital signals are discrete (binary 0s and 1s).
7. Types of Transducers?
Active (self-generating) and Passive (require external power) transducers.
8. What is an Instrumentation Amplifier?
It amplifies low-level signals with high common-mode noise rejection.
9. Accuracy vs Precision?
Accuracy is closeness to true value, precision is consistency in results.
10. Role of ADC in Instrumentation?
ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) changes analog sensor outputs into digital values for processing.
11. What is RTD?
RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) measures temperature by correlating resistance with
temperature.
12. What is Thermocouple?
A thermocouple is a sensor that generates voltage based on temperature difference between two
metals.
13. What is Dead Zone in Instrumentation?
It is a range where input changes do not cause any output change.
14. Explain Open Loop vs Closed Loop System.
Open Loop has no feedback; Closed Loop uses feedback to control system output.
15. What is a PLC?
PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is used for industrial automation and control processes.
16. What is SCADA?
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is used for real-time monitoring and control of
systems remotely.
