Load Calculation and Electrical
Panel Design Guide
This printable guide explains the fundamental process of calculating electrical loads and
designing electrical panels for safe and efficient distribution. It is suitable for engineers,
technicians, and electricians involved in power system planning and panel construction.
1. Load Calculation
Load calculation determines how much electrical power is required to operate devices
and systems. This ensures proper sizing of conductors, breakers, transformers, and
panels.
Key Formula (Three-Phase System):
I = P / (√3 × V × pf)
- I = Current in Amps
- P = Power in Watts (or kW × 1000)
- V = Voltage (line-to-line)
- pf = Power Factor (assume 0.8 if unknown)
Example:
For a 3-phase, 380V motor rated at 3 kW with pf = 0.85:
I = 3000 / (√3 × 380 × 0.85) ≈ 5.4 A
2. Electrical Panel Design
Panel design involves selecting and organizing protective devices, busbars, enclosures,
and wiring.
Steps:
1. Calculate total connected load (kW)
2. Calculate full load current (A)
3. Add 25% margin for safety
4. Select main breaker (MCCB)
5. Divide circuits (lighting, sockets, motors)
6. Select suitable MCBs or MPCBs
7. Size conductors and busbars
8. Choose IP-rated enclosure
9. Add protection: surge, thermal, RCD, etc.
Example: Load Calculation Table
Load Type Quantity Power Each (kW) Total Power (kW)
3-phase Motors 3 3 9
Lighting 10 0.04 0.4
Sockets 6 0.5 3
Total Load = 12.4 kW
Summary
- Always use correct formulas to calculate load current
- Choose protective devices rated above full load current with safety margin
- Subdivide circuits logically for easy troubleshooting and future expansion
- Use motor-rated protection for motor loads
- Ensure enclosure size and IP rating are appropriate for the environment
