Class 8 Science - Chapter: Friction

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

- Understand the meaning and causes of friction

- Learn the types of friction and factors affecting it

- Explore the advantages and disadvantages of friction

- Understand ways to increase or reduce friction

1. WHAT IS FRICTION?

- Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in contact.

- It always acts in the opposite direction to motion.

- It is a contact force.

Examples:

- Rubbing hands to produce heat.

- A ball slowing down on the ground due to friction.

2. CAUSES OF FRICTION

- Friction arises due to the irregularities (roughness) on the two surfaces in contact.

- Even smooth surfaces have microscopic irregularities.

3. TYPES OF FRICTION

i) Static Friction:

- Force that must be overcome to start the motion of a stationary object.

- Highest among all types.

ii) Sliding Friction:

- Force resisting the motion of an object already in motion.

- Less than static friction.

iii) Rolling Friction:

- Resistance when an object rolls over a surface.

- Least among all types.

Comparison: Static > Sliding > Rolling

4. FACTORS AFFECTING FRICTION

- Nature of surfaces: Rough surfaces have more friction.

- Weight of object: More weight means more friction.

- Area of contact (to some extent in sliding).

- Type of motion (static, sliding, rolling).

5. ADVANTAGES OF FRICTION

- Enables us to walk.

- Helps in holding objects.

- Useful in brakes, matches, machines, etc.

6. DISADVANTAGES OF FRICTION

- Causes wear and tear of machines.

- Produces heat in machinery.

- Reduces efficiency.

7. METHODS TO REDUCE FRICTION

- Use of lubricants like oil or grease.

- Polishing surfaces.

- Use of ball bearings.

- Streamlining of shapes (used in vehicles, aircraft).

8. METHODS TO INCREASE FRICTION

- Making surfaces rough.

- Using rubber soles in shoes.

- Treading tyres.

9. FLUID FRICTION (DRAG)

- Fluids (liquids and gases) also offer resistance to objects moving through them.

- This resistance is called **drag**.

Examples:

- Air resistance on cars.

- Water resistance on boats.

Streamlined shapes help reduce fluid friction.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:

1-Mark:

- What is friction?

- Which friction is the highest?

- Give one disadvantage of friction.

3-Mark:
- Define types of friction.

- What are the advantages of friction?

- How can friction be increased or decreased?

5-Mark:

- Explain factors affecting friction with examples.

- Describe methods to reduce fluid friction.

- Compare static, sliding, and rolling friction with examples.

SUMMARY TABLE:

Term | Description | Example

--------------|--------------------------------------|--------------------

Friction | Opposes motion between surfaces | Ball slowing down

Static Friction| Opposes start of motion | Pushing heavy box

Sliding Friction| Opposes motion of sliding object | Sliding a book

Rolling Friction| Resistance in rolling | Ball rolling

Lubricant | Substance that reduces friction | Oil, Grease

Drag | Frictional force in fluids | Air resistance
