Key differences between Strategic and Operational Management

1. Purpose
The primary difference between strategic and operational management is the purpose of
their functions. Strategic management allows company leaders to determine the business
course for an organization, while Operational management implements specific
procedures for following that course. For example, Mzuzu University may decide during
strategic management that the institution should expand its branches to a new district.
With this knowledge, operational management conducts research about the new district,
identifies suitable location and develops infrastructure plans
2. Duration
Another difference between operational and strategic is the length of planning that each
involves. Strategic management focuses on the future of the company, long term goals,
while Operation management focuses on short term ideas.

3. Leaders
Strategic and operational management differ in who conducts them within the business.
Strategic management decisions are made by those in high level management for instance
the CEO, while Operational management by managers at different levels responsible for
daily tasks and department activities.

4. Detail
Strategic management focuses on larger ideas without specifying many of the details for
implementation, while operational management details step and procedures to ensure all
processes function properly.

5. Focus
Strategic management is all about planning for the future and making sure a company
stays successful over time, while Operational management focuses on the present,
making sure daily tasks and processes run smoothly
