Oral Communication in Context ( Week 2)

Name: Grade level:

Topic: Nature and Elements of Communication
Lesson 1: Models of Communication

Learning Competencies:
 Differentiate the various models of communication

Models of Communication
1. Shannon-Weaver Model (1949)
Known as the mother of all communication models, shows communication as a linear or one-
way process consisting of five elements: asource (producer of message); a transmitter(encoder of
message into signals); a channel(signals/mediumused for transmission); a receiver(decoder of
message from the signal); and a destination.
This model however, has been criticized for missing one essential element in the
communication process: feedback. Without feedback, the speaker will not know whether the receiver
understands the message or not. Moreover, it featured also a Noise source. This noises may interfere
during the communication process.

2. Transactional Model
Unlike the Shannon-Weaver Model, transactional Model is a two-way process with the inclusion
of feedback as one element.

A B
As shown in the figure, this model is more interactive. There is a collaborative exchange of
messages between the communicators with the aim of understanding each other.
As you can see from the picture, both communicator A and B can send and receive feedback.
That what makes it interactive and collaborative. Communicator A encodes and sends message to
communicator B. Communicator B receives and decodes (interprets) the message. On the other hand,
communicator B encodes and sends also a message and communicator A receives and decodes it.
On the process of communication, there are some noises that might interfere or hinder the
communication. Example of these noises are: noisy and crowded environment where communication
takes place, slow internet connectivity, no mobile phone signal and other forms of interference that
might hinder communication to happen.

3. Schramm Model
The third model is a combination of Shannon – Weaver and Transaction models which proposed by
Schramm (1954). Study the model below in order to answer the following questions.

Activity 1: Comprehension Check

1. What elements are common to the three models?

2. What elements were added to transaction and Schramm model which are not present to Shannon –
Weaver model?

3. How would you describe the communication process in your own words?
Activity 2: Using a triple Venn diagram, give the similarities and differences of the three models of
communication. You can use a separate sheet for your answer in this activity.
