The Value of Time in Islam

Time is one of the greatest blessings that Allah ■ has given to mankind. It is the container of all
actions, and every moment that passes can never be brought back. For this reason, the Qur’an and
Sunnah emphasize the value of time and the importance of using it wisely. Allah ■ swears by time
in Surah Al-Asr: “By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done
righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (103:1-3).
This short Surah alone shows that time is a witness against man if he wastes it in heedlessness.
The Prophet Muhammad ■ said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: health and free
time.” (Bukhari). This hadith reminds us that time and health are gifts that must be invested before
they are taken away. In Islam, time is life itself. A believer is encouraged to organize his day around
acts of worship such as the five daily prayers. Beyond worship, time should be used for beneficial
knowledge, serving family, helping others, and striving in the path of Allah. Every second is an
opportunity to earn reward or to fall into heedlessness. The righteous predecessors were known to
value time immensely. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that wasting time is worse than death,
because death cuts you off from this world, but wasted time cuts you off from Allah. This shows the
seriousness of being mindful with one’s moments. Therefore, a Muslim should constantly ask
himself: how am I using my time? Am I preparing for the Hereafter, or am I distracted by fleeting
pleasures? Indeed, the successful are those who invest their time for the sake of Allah, turning
everyday actions into acts of worship through sincere intention.
