ROTATION PLAN
MEANING OF ROTATION: Regular succession of various member of a group in office
etc.

In nursing education program rotation refers to regular, successive and/ or recurrent


posting of various group of nursing students belonging to different classes in specific nursing
fields i.e. in different hospital wards, OT, OPD, community health fields.

MEANING OF ROTATION PLAN: A plan made in written showing rotationally duties of


staff or students in needed areas to achieve their goals.

TYPES OF ROTATION PLAN:

MASTER ROTATION PLAN:

The master rotation plan is an overall plan of rotation of all the students in a particular
educational institution showing the placement of the students belonging to various groups/
classes in clinical nursing as well as community nursing fields denoting the duration of such
placement together with placement of theoretical teaching block/period.

Features of master rotation plan:

 It is prepared in advance for the whole year so that it gives a complete and clear picture
about student’s clinical and field placement during an academic session.
 It include theory classes and clinical experiences in parallel run way.
 Plan must include the period of vacation, teaching block, preparation time/week etc.
Purpose of master rotation plan:

 Availability of an advance plan of curricular activities, evaluation and vacation plan


for all groups of students during a particular academic year/ during the entire
program.
 All concerned are aware of the placement of student in various community field and
areas, making coordination more effective.
 The student learns their clinical and community placement in advance. This helps
them to prepare themselves for working in these areas.
 Evaluation of the program is more effective.
 Nursing services staff and nursing faculty members are in a position to make tentative
advance plan for their vacation etc without jeopardy the teaching learning activities.

INDIVIDUAL ROTATION PLAN:

It is made to make sure that each student in a particular block posting undergoes experience
in each area. The objectives of the experience are discussed with the students so that they can
gain maximum during the time of their clinical placement.

CLINICAL ROTATION PLAN:

Posting of students in different clinical areas, in such a way that each group assures their
duties in every area so that goal to be achieved.

Factors considered for planning clinical rotation plan:

 Objectives of the course


 No of students in each class
 No of department/ agencies/ areas
 Size of the department, presence of students, agency authority’s concern and
considered.
 No of persons available for supervision
 Indian nursing council requirement.
Basic principles in clinical rotation plan:

 Clinical rotation plan must be accordance with the total curriculum plan. Theoretical
instructions should proceed as closely as possible the clinical experience, ward class,
clinical case presentation should be held today.
 Instructor at 1:4 student ratio
 Selection of areas of experiences should for simple to complex
 The clinical teaching staff be involved whenever feasible and must be familiar with
the rotation plan. A copy of the rotation plan should be available in each area.
 First year student should be posted where they will get maximum supervision from
clinical supervisor and qualified nursing staff.
 Each student must be provided experiences in each block, no block should be missed.
 Overcrowding of student in any clinical areas should be avoided
 Overlapping of work should be avoided
 In outside areas student leave their area after completion of work
 Continuously of services, where considered essential must be maintained
 The rotation plan must be made in advance.

NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS IN THE CLINICAL AREAS:

 Identify the objectives for their respective clinical placement


 Orientation to each new clinical areas
 Necessary facilities made available for the practice of good nursing with correlation
of theoretical principles into practice
 Assignment should be given according to the level of learning
 Give opportunity to work in a team
 Participation in the activities of ward
 Opportunity to see high standard of patient care being practiced.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSING SERVICE STAFF:

 To demonstrate a high standard of pt care and to create an atmosphere which


encourage learning
 To make evaluation report in connection with student clinical experience
 To help the student nurse learn to develop skill
 To participate in the teaching of the student in the clinical field
 To have well organized and accurate record system
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SCHOOL NURSING STAFF:

 To make sure that each student is aware of the objective of the clinical experience
 To guide student to get required clinical experience
 To supervise and teach student in the clinical field in collaboration with clinical staff
 To plan the course outline so that the content will be preferably taught while they are
in the clinical area
 Discuss with the students the methods of evaluation of their clinical experience in the
respective areas.
