UNDERGRADUATE CONCEPT NOTE

TITLE OF PROPOSED STUDY: The Effect of AI Integration on Senior High Students’ Conceptual
Understanding and Problem-Solving in Mathematics

NAME OF STUDENT: Charles Janus J. Berba

Course: Bachelor of Secondary Education - Major in Mathematics
NAME & RANK OF ADVISER: Prof. [Adviser’s Name], [Rank]

RATIONALE
In today’s era of technological advancement, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a
transformative tool across different sectors, including education. Mathematics, as a discipline that
requires critical thinking and higher-order problem-solving skills, continues to pose challenges to
many learners. Senior high school students, in particular, often struggle to fully grasp abstract
concepts and apply them effectively in problem-solving situations. The integration of AI-powered
learning applications—such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive platforms, and problem-solving
software—has the potential to support students by reinforcing conceptual understanding and
enhancing their mathematical performance. The Department of Education (DepEd) in the
Philippines highlights the importance of strengthening 21st-century skills, particularly technological
literacy, logical reasoning, and problem-solving, as part of the K-12 curriculum. Similarly, the
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and UNESCO emphasize the significant role of digital
innovations in improving educational outcomes worldwide. However, there remains a limited body
of research examining the direct effects of AI integration on senior high school students’ learning in
mathematics within the Philippine context. This research therefore aims to address this gap and
contribute meaningful insights on the role of AI in fostering conceptual understanding and
problem-solving among senior high school learners.

PURPOSE
The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration
on the conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities of senior high school students in
mathematics. Specifically, the study seeks to: 1. Assess the level of conceptual understanding in
mathematics among senior high school students prior to the integration of AI tools. 2. Measure the
problem-solving performance of students before the use of AI in mathematics instruction. 3.
Implement AI-based educational tools to support the teaching and learning of mathematical
concepts. 4. Evaluate the changes in students’ conceptual understanding and problem-solving
performance after exposure to AI tools. 5. Examine students’ perceptions and experiences in
utilizing AI as a support mechanism for learning mathematics. 6. Provide recommendations for
educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers on the integration of AI tools in mathematics
instruction at the senior high school level.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Potential recommendations for curriculum developers include designing mathematics curricula that seamlessly incorporate AI tools, such as adaptive learning platforms and intelligent tutoring systems, to complement traditional instructional methods. They should ensure curricular content is adaptable to AI capabilities and provides teachers with guidance on effectively integrating these tools. Moreover, training programs for educators that focus on using AI to enhance teaching outcomes should be developed to maximize the tools' potential .

AI integration is expected to impact students' perceptions and experiences by providing a more engaging and personalized learning environment. Students may perceive mathematics as more accessible and enjoyable due to interactive AI tools that cater to their individual learning needs. They might also experience increased motivation and confidence in their problem-solving capabilities, positively influencing their overall attitude towards mathematics and technology use in education .

AI-powered educational tools can be implemented by incorporating intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, and problem-solving software into the mathematics curriculum. These tools offer personalized learning experiences, real-time feedback, and individualized support, enabling students to better understand complex concepts and improve their problem-solving skills. Such technology facilitates differentiated learning and can accommodate diverse student needs .

Students might encounter challenges such as technology access issues, lack of familiarity with AI tools, and potential reliance on AI solutions without fully developing problem-solving independence. Additionally, there may be difficulties in adapting to AI-driven pedagogies that differ from traditional teaching methods. Addressing these challenges requires adequate training, resources, and support systems to facilitate effective integration and maximize the benefits of AI in learning .

There is a need for research on the effects of AI integration in Philippine senior high school mathematics due to the limited body of research in this specific context. While AI has the potential to improve educational outcomes, understanding its direct effects on mathematics learning for Filipino students is crucial for evidencing its benefits and guiding effective implementation strategies. This gap in the literature also means there is an opportunity to contribute new insights and potentially influence educational policy and practice .

AI integration enhances students' conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills by providing intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive platforms, and problem-solving software. These tools support learning by offering personalized feedback and tailored learning experiences, which can lead to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and improved problem-solving abilities. The study aims to evaluate the changes in students' performance in these areas after exposure to AI tools, addressing a gap in the Philippine educational context .

The Department of Education in the Philippines recognizes the importance of AI in strengthening 21st-century skills, such as technological literacy, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. These skills are integral to the K-12 curriculum, and AI tools can enhance these competencies by providing students with innovative learning opportunities that leverage technology for educational advancement .

Educators and policymakers can benefit from the study's findings by gaining insights into the effectiveness of AI tools in enhancing students' mathematical learning. The research provides empirical evidence to inform curriculum development, guide the integration of technology in classrooms, and devise policies that support student achievement through AI-enhanced education. Recommendations from the study can help educators incorporate AI strategically into their teaching practices and assist policymakers in shaping future educational technology agendas .

The study aims to contribute to the global discourse on digital innovations by providing context-specific insights into the effectiveness of AI in enhancing learning outcomes. By investigating AI integration within the Philippine education system, it adds to the broader understanding of how digital tools can improve pedagogy across diverse educational settings. The study's findings could inform international comparisons and encourage more widespread adoption of AI technologies to foster global educational improvement .

The research proposes to measure changes in students' conceptual understanding and problem-solving performance by assessing these competencies before and after the integration of AI tools. This involves evaluating students' initial levels of understanding and problem-solving abilities, implementing AI-powered educational interventions, and subsequently reassessing to identify any improvements or changes. Such a comparative analysis allows for a systematic examination of the impact of AI on student learning outcomes .
