■ SAT MATH STUDY BOOK

Chapter 1: Linear Equations & Inequalities

Concepts:
• Linear equation: An equation of degree 1 (e.g., 2x + 3 = 11)
• Forms: slope-intercept (y = mx + b), standard form (Ax + By = C)
• Slope m = ∆y/∆x. Parallel lines → equal slopes, perpendicular → product = -1
• Linear inequalities use <, ≤, >, ≥ instead of =

Solved Examples:
1. Solve: 2x + 3 = 11 → 2x = 8 → x = 4.
2. Solve inequality: 5x – 7 < 18 → 5x < 25 → x < 5.
3. Equation of line through (2,3) slope 4: y – 3 = 4(x – 2) → y = 4x – 5.

Practice Questions:
1. Solve: 7x – 2 = 19
2. Solve inequality: 3x + 4 ≥ 10
3. Equation of line parallel to y = 2x + 1 through (4,5)
4. Intersection of y = 2x + 1 and y = –x + 4

Tips & Tricks:

• Isolate variables step by step
• Plug answer choices into equations (back-solving)
• Flip inequality sign when multiplying/dividing by negative

Chapter 2: Systems of Equations

Concepts:
• Two equations with two variables.
• Methods: substitution, elimination, graphing

Solved Examples:
1. Solve: x + y = 10, x – y = 2 → Add: 2x = 12 → x = 6, y = 4.
2. Solve: 2x + 3y = 12, x – y = 5 → Substitution → (x, y) = (5.4, 0.4)

Practice Questions:
1. Solve: 3x + 2y = 12, 2x – y = 1
2. If 2 pencils + 3 pens = 15 and 4 pencils + 5 pens = 29, find prices
3. Solve: 5x – 2y = 14, 3x + 4y = 10

Tips & Tricks:

• Elimination faster than substitution
• Multiply one equation to align coefficients
• Assign variables clearly in word problems
