Deviation

Problem Set

1. Calculate the range, variance, and standard deviation for the

following test scores:

Scores: 72, 85, 90, 78, 88

 Range:
= 90 (Highest Score)
= 72 (Lowest Score)
= 90 - 72= 18

 Variance:
Step 1
= 72 + 85 + 90 + 78 + 88= 413
= 413 / 5 = 82. 6 (mean)

Step 2: Calculate the deviation of each score from the mean.

= 72-82.6= -10.6
= 85-82.6= 2.4
= 90-82.6= 7.4
=78-82.6= -4.6
=88-82.6=5.4

Step 3: Square each deviation.

=(-10.6)^2= 112.36
=(2.4)^2= 5.76
=(7.4)^2= 54.76
=(-4.6)^2= 21.16
=(5.4)^2= 29.16

Step 4: Sum the Squared deviation.

= 112.36 + 5.76 + 54.76 + 21.16 + 29.16 = 223.2

Step 5: Divide the sum of squared deviations by the number

of scores minus one (for sample variance.)
= 223.2 / ( 5 - 1)= 55.8
 Standard Deviation
Step 1: Calculate the square root of the variance.

Ages: 12, 15, 14, 18, 20, 17

 Range:
= 20 (Highest age)
= 12 (Lowest age)
= 20 - 12= 8

(Therefore, the range is 8.)

 Variance
Step 1:
= 12+15+14+18+20+17=96
=96 / 6= 16

Step 2: Calculate the deviation of each age from the mean.

= 12-16= 4
=15-16=-1
=14-16=-2
=18-16= 2
=20-16= 4
=17-16= 1

Step 3: Square each deviation.

=(-4)^2 = 16
=(-1)^2 = 1
=(-2)^2 = 4
=(2)^2 = 4
=(4)^2 = 16
=(1)^2 = 1

=(-7.5)^2 = 56.25
=(-2.5)^2 = 6.25
=(2.5)^2 = 6.25
=(7.5)^2 = 56.25
=(12.5)^2 = 156.25

Step 4: Sum the squared deviations.

=156.25 + 56.25 + 6.25 + 6.25 + 56.25 + 156.25 = 431.25

Step 5: Divide the sum of squared deviations by the number
