QUESTION NO 1

Electronic Construction Techniques and Single-

Layer PCB Design

1. Overview of Electronic Construction Techniques:

Electronic construction encompasses a range of techniques used for
creating electronic circuits. These methods vary in complexity and are
chosen based on the requirements of the project, such as prototype
development, small-scale production, or large-scale manufacturing.

 Breadboarding A quick way to test circuit designs, breadboards

allow for non-permanent construction without soldering.
Components are inserted into a grid of holes connected by metal
strips.

 Point-to-Point Construction: Components are soldered directly to

each other or onto terminal strips. Suitable for prototypes and
custom designs but can be unreliable for complex circuits.

 Wire-Wrap: A durable method where wires are wrapped around

posts of components. It creates reliable connections but is labor-
intensive and not suitable for mass production.

 Surface-Mount Technology (SMT): Components are mounted

directly on the surface of PCBs, allowing for higher component
density and automated assembly. SMT is prevalent in modern
electronic manufacturing.

 Through-Hole Technology: Components with leads are inserted

into holes drilled in PCBs and soldered to pads on the opposite side.
It's stronger than SMT but takes up more space.

2. Single-Layer PCB Design Techniques:

Single-layer PCBs have conductive copper patterns on
one side of an insulating board, suitable for simpler
circuits.

 Design Considerations:
 Component Placement: Components
should be arranged to minimize track lengths and avoid
crossing tracks.
 Power and Ground Planes: Designate specific areas or
tracks for power and ground to reduce noise and interference.
 Signal Integrity: Ensure that tracks are designed to
minimize interference and signal degradation.

 Layout and Routing:
 Track Width and Spacing: Determine based on current
carrying capacity and voltage levels.
 Avoid Sharp Bends: Use 45-degree angles for track turns to
reduce etching problems and improve reliability.

 Etching Process:
 Involves removing unwanted copper to leave the desired
pattern of tracks. Care must be taken to ensure accurate
etching without damaging the remaining tracks.

 Drilling:
 Holes are drilled for through-hole components and vias.
Precision is crucial to ensure alignment with the copper tracks.

 Soldering and Assembly:

 Components are soldered to the PCB. Proper soldering
technique is essential for reliable connections.

 Testing and Debugging:

 The completed PCB is tested for electrical continuity, shorts,
and functionality.

Types of single layer PCB

Single layer rigid PCBs: it’s the type of a

single layer PCB which is made up of a rigid
material such as fiber glass. The circuit boards
are inflexible but prevent the circuit from
breaking and bending. Now they are used for
various types of devices for example power
supplies and calculators and so on.

Single layer flexible PCBs: it’s the type of a

single layer PCB which is made up of a flexible
material instead of a rigid material. What’s
more, they use the plastic materials. And single layer flexible PCBs have many advantages
over single layer rigid PCBs but they have a high cost for fabrication.

Single layer high frequency PCBs: it’s the type of single layer PCBs which is used in high
frequency PCB generally in giga hertz. The boards are made up of a Teflon or polyphenylene
oxide (PPO) material. There are some tips you need to know when choosing high frequency
single layer PCBs, such as thermal expansion, dielectric loss as well as water absorption and
so on.

Single layer rigid-flex PCBs: it’s the type of single layer PCBs which is made up of the
combination of fiber glass and plastic. So single layer are associated with plastic and fiber

glass. They have a lot of advantages over single layer rigid and flexible PCB, for example,
reducing the size and weight of overall PCB.

Single layer aluminum backed PCBs: it’s the type of single layer PCB which is consist of
aluminum material substrate. The design of the boards are quite similar to copper backed
PCB, however there is a difference, which it uses the aluminum PCBs substrate instead of
copper. Because aluminum backed is used with thermal insulating material for transferring
the heat from insulating material to back.

QUESTION NO 2

Types of Diodes

1. Schottky Diode:
 Features a low forward voltage drop and fast
switching times.
 Commonly used in power rectification, voltage
clamping, and as a freewheeling diode in power
converters.

2. Tunnel Diode:
 Known for its negative resistance property, which
allows it to amplify signals.
 Used in high-frequency oscillators and microwave
applications.

3. Varactor Diode:
 Operates as a variable capacitor controlled by
voltage.
 Utilized in RF tuning circuits and voltage-
controlled oscillators.

4. Light Emitting Diode (LED):

 Emits light when current flows through it in the
forward direction.
 Widely used in indicators, lighting solutions, and
display technologies.

5. Laser Diode:
 Similar to LEDs but emits coherent light.
 Used in optical communication, laser printers,
and barcode scanners.
