SDG 7 -Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and
modern energy for all.
Learning Objective: To describe the need for affordable and
clean energy for sustainable development.
Introduction: During the past 20 years, the number of people with access to electricity
has increased by 1.7 billion, and since the world population keeps increasing, the
demand for cheap energy is very high. Many years with dependency on fossil fuels have
resulted in a rise in greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions affect nature and create
challenges everywhere in the world with drastic changes to our climate system.
To work towards more sustainable energy, we need initiatives and ideas to reduce our
use of fossil fuels. Luckily, we see a strong development in alternative energy sources,
and in 2011 more than 20% of the world’s energy originated in renewable energy
sources. SDG 7 about affordable and clean energy is an important goal that we can all
work with and contribute to by reducing the amount of electricity we use every day.
Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that is
sustainable and totally inexhaustible, unlike fossil
fuels that are finite. Solar energy is used for heating water
for domestic use, heating space in buildings and
generating electrical energy.
Look around and find out where solar panels are used in your
surroundings...!!!

[Link] are examples of affordable and clean energy? What is a target goal of affordable
and clean energy?
Ans)Solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, biofuels, natural gas, coal, petroleum, uranium. B) Ensure universal
access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services, increasesubstantially the share of renewable energy in
the global energy mix, and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
2. What is the advantage of switching from the use of classic energy sources to
renewable energy sources?
Ans) Generating energy that produces no greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and reduces some types of
air pollution. Diversifying energy supply and reducing dependence on imported fuels. Creating economic
development and jobs in manufacturing and installation.
3. What are the initiatives carried out in UAE to sustain economic development with the
use of renewable energy sources?
Ans) The UAE's efforts to reduce emissions include increasing reliance on clean energy, boosting energy
efficiency, expanding capacity for carbon capture, use, and storage, conserving blue carbon ecosystems,
promoting sustainable agriculture, and implementing environment-friendly waste management.
The variation and availability of renewable energy in UAE is depicted in the figure.
4. Interpret the Pie chart given above
and convert all the given renewable energies to fractional form and decimal form.
Ans)Geothermal-10/100=1/10,0.1
Hydropower-5/100=1/20,0.5
Biofuel-10/100=1/10,0.1
Wind-20/100=1/5,0.2
Solar-55/100=11/20,0.55
Optional Task:
Activity: Planning and Development of a sustainable city
Plan and design a sustainable city which include railways, hospitals, house/hut,
supermarkets, etc. with sustainable, affordable and renewable energy sources.
Present your work in the form of any one of the following.
1. Poster
2. PPT
3. Word document
4.3D model
5. or Any other online tool
Also list the 2-D and 3-D shapes used to make the city.
Name the different types of angles formed.
