AVALOKANA & QUESTION BANK (2025-26)
Subject: Mathematics Class: X Date: 01-07-2025
Name of the Chapter: ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION [ Weightage: 8 marks]

ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION
A succession of numbers or terms arranged according to some rule is called a sequence/
progression.
An AP is a list of numbers in which each tern1 is obtained by adding a fixed number d to the
preceding term except the first term a. This fixed number is called the common difference of the
AP, which can be positive, negative or zero.
The general form of an AP is a , a + d, a + 2d , a + 3d, ................. .
The sequence a 1 , a 2 , a 3 ..................... an is an AP of n terms with common difference d,
Iff an - an-l = an-1 - an-z = ••• ......... = a2 - a1 =d
n th TERM OF AN AP
The n th term an of an AP is an = a+ (n - l)d where a is the first term, dis the con1mon
difference and n is the numer of terms.
d = lln+1 - an
. The n th term from the end of a finite AP

If there are n terms in an AP, the n th term is known as last term of an AP and it is denoted by
l ,which is given by the formula l = a + (n - l)d
Note:

• For an AP ln = a+ (n - l)d
=> if d > 0 , the AP is increasing.
if d < 0, the AP is decreasing
if d = 0, all the terms of the AP are same
• If three terms a ,band Care in AP, then b - a= c - b Or
• 2b =a+ c or
• b = c+a
2

• Note that b is known as arithmetic mean of a and b.

SUM OF FIRST n TERMS OF AN AP

If first term of an AP be a and its common difference is d, then the sum Sn, of the first n terms of an
AP is given by

Sn = ~2 [2a + (n - l)d] or Sn = 2n (a+ an) where '1n = nth term of the AP

If Lis the last term of an AP of n terms, then the sum of all n terms can also be given by
Sn=; (a+ l)
.. . . . b S n ( n +1 )
Th e sum of fi1rst n pos1t1ve integers 1s given y n = 2

To find n th term from the sum of n terms of an AP:

If Sn is the sum of the first n terms of an AP, then its n is given by an = Sn - Sn-i
