Lorainne Stacey Obligado – 11 STEM B
ASYNCHRONOUS ACTIVITY #1
Topic: Classifying Matters Based on its Properties
At the end of this recall activity, the students should be able to do the following:
1. Identify common household items and classify them as either element, compound,
homogeneous mixture, or heterogeneous mixture.
2. Construct a schematic diagram for the classification of matter.
Instruction:
Below is a list of common household items which can be found at home. Based on your
observed properties, classify each material as element, compound, homogeneous mixture, or
heterogeneous mixture.
Household Item Properties Classification
Vinegar (Acetic Acid in - Acetic acid water has
Water) an antiseptic water Homogeneous Mixture
that can treat
infections. But
vinegar with the
acetic acid water is
used most specifically
for medicines. Both
can be mixed as they
are both waters.
- Solubility
Table Salt (NaCl) - Sodium Chloride is
known to be used in Compound
food flavouring or in
preservations. It is a
- Intensive Property
Table Sugar (Sucrose)
- Used as a sweetener, Compound
adding more flavor to
the food to make it
interesting.
- Solubility
- Decomposition
Soft Drink - Melting point
- Freezing point Homogeneous Mixture
- Solubility
- It usually contains
sweetener, carbon
dioxide, flavoring,
coloring, chemical
preservatives and
foaming.
Baking Soda (NaHCO3) - Mostly used to treat
indigestion and Homogeneous Mixture
heartburn. Although
it can be also used in
food mixtures to
creatively lighten its
texture of baked
foods.
Sandwich Spread (Any brand) - Does not appear to be
uniform. All Heterogeneous Mixture
ingredients can be
seen even if it was
gone into some
processes. There are
bits of a size that are
seen within the
spread.
- Malleability
Aluminum Foil - Conductivity
- Can be used to cover Homogeneous Mixture
food to heat food.
- Does not burn
through the heat
processes (ex:
microwave)
Rubbing Alcohol - Solubility
- Homogenous Mixture
Gravel - Physical Properties
- Chemical Properties Heterogeneous Mixture
- Crushed stones to
build up highways,
road, etc.
Milk in Water - Solubility
Homogenous Mixture
Questions:
1. How many samples are considered pure substances? How many are considered
mixtures? - 2 substances and 8 mixtures.
2. From the samples that are considered mixtures, choose one, and provide one way
of physically separating its component substances.
- That would be the sandwich spread wherein even though there are a lot of different
spreads, there are some that may be seen other ingredients that has been mixed
through. Smaller pieces of an ingredient will be enough to be identified that it is indeed
mixed in the spread to create more flavorful taste.
3. Why is it important to classify matter into elements, compounds, homogeneous
mixtures, and heterogeneous mixtures?
- We can say that it can be acknowledge as a bit of a knowledge in case you are looking
for its importance like this. It defines through what can these substances and
components can be a lot of works to do than what you think it may be.
4. Draw a schematic diagram to summarize the classification of matter.
