Social Media Impact on Student Performance

This study employs a descriptive-correlational research design to explore the relationship between social media usage and academic performance among university students using a mixed-methods approach. A sample of 350 undergraduate students will be selected through stratified random sampling, and data will be collected via a structured questionnaire covering demographics, social media habits, academic performance, and perceptions. Ethical considerations include informed consent, anonymity, and confidentiality, ensuring minimal risk to participants.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This study will utilize a descriptive-correlational research design,

which allows the researcher to examine the relationship between
two or more variables without manipulating them. This design is
appropriate for determining the impact of social media usage
(independent variable) on academic performance (dependent
variable) among university students.

A mixed-methods approach will also be used, combining both

quantitative data (through surveys) and qualitative data (through
open-ended questions and interviews) to provide a more
comprehensive understanding of students' social media habits and
their perceived academic effects.

3.2 Population and Sampling

The target population includes undergraduate students enrolled at

[Insert University Name] during the academic year 2025–2026. The
students are from various colleges (e.g., Arts, Sciences,
Engineering, etc.) to ensure a representative sample.

A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure

that students from different year levels and academic programs are
proportionately represented. From an estimated total population of
5,000 students, a sample size of 350 students will be selected,
based on Slovin’s formula with a 5% margin of error.

3.3 Research Instruments

The primary data collection tool will be a structured questionnaire,

divided into four sections:

1. Demographic Profile – Includes age, gender, course, year level,

etc.

2. Social Media Usage – Assesses platform preferences, daily

usage duration, and purpose of use.
3. Academic Performance – Respondents will self-report their
most recent semester GPA or grade average.

4. Perceptions and Effects – Includes Likert-scale questions and

open-ended items on how social media affects study habits,
concentration, and academic performance.

The questionnaire will be pilot-tested with 30 students to ensure

clarity and reliability, with results analyzed using Cronbach’s Alpha
for internal consistency.

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

1. Permission – The researcher will obtain formal approval from

the university's research ethics committee.

2. Distribution – Questionnaires will be distributed physically and

online (e.g., via Google Forms), depending on the students'
accessibility and preferences.

3. Collection – Responses will be collected over a period of two

weeks, with reminders sent to improve response rate.

4. Confidentiality – All participants will remain anonymous, and

responses will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Participants will sign an informed consent form before participating

in the study.

3.5 Data Analysis

Quantitative data will be analyzed using Statistical Package for the

Social Sciences (SPSS):

 Descriptive Statistics – To summarize demographic data and

social media usage (mean, frequency, percentage).

 Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) – To examine the

relationship between social media usage time and academic
performance.

 Regression Analysis – To determine the predictive strength of

social media usage on academic outcomes.
Qualitative responses from open-ended questions and interviews
will be thematically analyzed to extract key insights and recurring
patterns.

3.6 Ethical Considerations

 Informed Consent – All participants will be fully informed about

the study’s purpose, procedures, and their right to withdraw at
any time.

 Anonymity and Confidentiality – No personal identifiers will be

collected, and data will be stored securely.

 Non-maleficence – The study poses minimal to no risk to

participants, focusing solely on non-invasive survey responses.

 Transparency – Findings will be shared with participants and

relevant university stakeholders upon request.

The study addresses ethical concerns by obtaining informed consent from participants, ensuring anonymity, and treating responses with strict confidentiality. No personal identifiers are collected, data is securely stored, and participants are informed of their right to withdraw at any time. Additionally, findings are shared transparently with participants and stakeholders, adhering to ethical research practices .

The research methodology employs a descriptive-correlational research design combined with a mixed-methods approach, allowing for the examination of relationships between variables without manipulation. This approach includes quantitative surveys and qualitative data through open-ended questions and interviews, providing in-depth insights into students' social media habits and perceived academic effects .

A high response rate increases the reliability of research findings by ensuring that the sample is representative of the entire population, thereby reducing bias. In this study, reminders are sent to improve the response rate during a two-week collection period. A more representative response increases the confidence in the generalizability of the findings .

Pilot testing the questionnaire with 30 students helps ensure the clarity and reliability of the survey items. This preliminary step allows for the identification and correction of any ambiguities or inconsistencies before full-scale data collection, thereby enhancing the overall quality and validity of the research instrument .

The study employs Cronbach’s Alpha to assess the internal consistency and reliability of its research instruments. This statistical measure evaluates the extent to which survey items are interrelated, ensuring that the instrument consistently measures the intended constructs across different items .

The study uses regression analysis to determine the predictive strength of social media usage on academic outcomes. This statistical method analyses the extent to which independent variables like social media usage can predict variations in the dependent variable, which is academic performance .

The study maintains non-maleficence by posing minimal risk to participants, focusing solely on non-invasive survey responses. This ethical principle ensures that participants are not harmed, physically or psychologically, by their participation. Upholding this principle is crucial in maintaining trust and integrity in the research process .

Utilizing both online and physical distribution methods accommodates various student preferences and accessibility issues, potentially increasing participation rates and sample diversity. This mixed distribution strategy enhances the representativeness and breadth of data collected, providing a more complete picture of the population being studied .

Stratified random sampling ensures that different strata or subgroups within the population are proportionately represented, which enhances the generalizability of the study’s findings to the entire undergraduate student population. It reduces sampling bias and increases the precision of the estimates by ensuring diverse perspectives from students in various colleges and year levels .

Using both quantitative and qualitative data provides a more comprehensive understanding of the impacts of social media on academic performance. Quantitative data offers numerical insights and statistical relationships, while qualitative data provides depth through narratives and personal experiences, uncovering nuanced effects and perception patterns that numbers alone might miss .
