Name:

1. Highlight two answers that best fit into the “effect” box to complete the cause
and effect chart.

Cause:
Mr. Birway reading the journal out loud

A. Sal and her classmates are looking forward to it.

B. Sal and her classmates are not happy with this idea.
C. Sal and her classmates ask to go to the nurse or go to the bathroom.
D. Sal and her classmates think this is a great opportunity to get to know
each other better.

2. Read the paragraph:

Phoebe went into a rage. 'You idiot,' she said. She scooped up the message, the hairs,
and her list and ran out of the office. Sergeant Bickle glanced at me and followed her. I
waited, thinking he would bring Phoebe back and calm her down. I looked at the
photographs on his desk, the ones I had not been able to see the day before. In one
was Sergeant Bickle and a friendly looking woman - his wife, I supposed. The second
picture was of a shiny black car. The third picture was of Sergeant Bickle, the woman,
and a young man - their son, I figured. I looked closer. I recognized the son. It was the
lunatic.

Highlight one cause for the given effect.

Cause:

A. Phoebe calls Sergeant Bickle dumb and walks away.

B. Phoebe calls Sergeant Bickle an idiot and runs out.
C. Sal and Phoebe get into a fight at the police station.
D. Phoebe is sad her mother is still missing.

Effect:

Sal gets a closer look at the pictures left on Sergeant Bickle’s desk.
