Lesson guide

Unit 10. At the zoo

By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to:

- pronounce the sound of the letter M/m in isolation and in the words mango, monkey,
mother and mouse correctly.

- say the sound of the letter M/m and the words words mango, monkey, mother and mouse
in a chant.

- recognize the words in different situations when listening.

- use ”That’s a _____.” to identify someone or something.

- trace the letter M/m and complete the words __ango, __other, ___onkey, ___ouse.

- sing a song with the structure ”That’s a/my _____.”

Lesson 1

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

- pronounce the sound of the letter m in isolation and in the words mother, mouse, mango,
monkey.

- listen and recognize the words mother, mouse, mango, monkey.

- recognize and say the words.

Procedures Activities

Warm-up Goal: Warm up the class and introduce the sound m.

Time: 5 minutes

• Have pupils look at the picture parts and guess the letter

• Ask What is it? Students answer the letter

Listen and repeat Step 1

Goal: Introduce new language.

Time: 3 minutes

• Say Open your book! with a TPR action. Have pupils open the
book, Unit 10 At the zoo. Teacher opens the digital book.

• Stick the card with letter m and say the sound.

• Play the recording/say and have pupils listen and repeat.

Step 2

Goals: Pupils will be able to listen and repeat the unit key words mother
and monkey.

Recognize and say the words with flashcards.

Time: 3 minutes

 Introduce the unit keywords mother and monkey with


flashcards.
 On the board, there are two flashcards for mother and monkey.
The flashcard for mother is above the flashcard for monkey.
 Teacher points to the mother, says the word and has pupils
repeat the word.
 Do the same with monkey.
 Have pupils guess the word and repeat by pointing to mother
and monkey. Hold your hand up or down to the position of the
flashcard.
 Turn over the cards, have pupils guess the card and shout out
the word.
 Swap the cards and have pupils guess.

Step 3

Goals: Pupils will be able to listen and repeat the unit keywords mango
and mouse.

Recognize and say the words with flashcards.

Time 3 minutes.

 Do the same with step 2.

Step 4

Goal: Pupils will practice more the new words.

Time 3 minutes.

Memory game

 Show the slide for the first time.


 Then show the next slides that the order of the 2 words has
been changed.
 Have pupils find out what words have been changed and say.

Point and say Step 1

Goal: Pupils will be able to listen and repeat the words.

Time: 3 minutes

 Have pupils listen and repeat the words once again but vary the
speed to have fun.

Step 2.
Goal: Pupils will be able to listen and point to the pictures.

Time: 3 minutes

 Have pupils listen and point to the pictures in the book.


 Teacher can ask some pupils to read then others point.

Step 3

Goal: Pupils will be able to point and say to the pictures.

Time: 5 minutes

 Point to the word mother and say mother.


 Point to other words and have pupils say.
 Have pupils work in pair, 1 points and the other says.

Game Chair game

Goal: Pupils will be able to recognize the unit words: pictures, sounds,
and meanings.

Time: 5 minutes

• Put 4 flashcards into 4 different chairs.

• Two persons play each round.

• Teacher speaks a word in English.

• Have pupils quickly sit on the chair with the word on

• Who is faster is the winner.

• After the game, have the whole class repeat the word in chorus.

Wrap-up Repeat the words with rhythm and say goodbye.


Lesson 2

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

- say the sound of the letter M/m, the words mother, mouse, monkey, mango in a chant.

- listen, recognize the words and tick the correct boxes.

- trace the letter M/ m and complete the words _other, _onkey, _ouse, _ango.

Warm-up Slap the slide

Goal: Warm up and revise the Unit keywords.

Time: 5 minutes

• Show the slide

• Have pupils slap the picture on the slide when Teacher says the
word

Listen and chant Step 1

Goal: Pupils will be able to read the chant lyrics

Time: 3 minutes.

 Have pupils read the chant lyrics in chorus, then in group

Step 2

Goal: Pupils will be able to listen, chant and clap along.

Time: 3 minutes

Play the recording, have pupils listen and clap along.

Play the recording, have pupils listen, clap and chant along

• Round 1. Have pupils listen and clap along.

• Round 2. Have pupils listen and do the TPR actions with teacher.

• Round 3. Have pupils listen and do the actions and chant along.

• Repeat round 3 several times.

Step 3

Goal: Pupils will be able to chant and clap along in pairs.

Time: 3 minutes

 Have pupils chant along in pairs.

Listen and tick Step 1

Goal: Pupils will be able to listen and choose the correct pictures.
Time: 5 minutes

• Say Listen and tick with the TPR actions.

• Play the recording and demonstrate the example.

• Play the recording and have pupils do the task.

Step 2

Goal: Check

Time: 5 minutes

• Play the recording and have pupils say the answer

• Play the recording again and have pupils repeat then give correct
answer.

Look and Trace Goal: Pupils will be able to trace the letter.

Time: 5 minutes

• Have pupils write the word by air tracing and say the word.

• Demonstrate how to trace the word and have pupils do the task.

Game Translation game

Goal: Revise the words

Time: 5 minutes

 Use the flashcards to play the game.


 Have one pupil mime the word for others to guess and say
or vice versa.

Wrap-up Repeat the words with rhythm and say goodbye.


Lesson 3

By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

- introduce a thing with the structure “That’s a/my____” .

- sing a long the unit song.

Warm-up Who’s faster?

Goal: Warm up and revise the Unit.

Time: 2 minutes

 Teacher shows the slide


 In 1 minute, have pupils find how many letters M.

Listen and repeat Step 1

Goal: Introduce the sound and the meaning of the structure

Time: 5 minutes.

 Introduce the structure and have pupils listen.


 Point to a flash card for mother and say That’s a mother. Repeat
the sentence many times
 Do the same with other words
 Ask pupils if they understand the sentence and explain in mother
tongue if it is needed

Step 2

Goal: Pupils will be able to repeat the structure That’s a…

Time: 3 minutes.

 Have pupils open the book, listen and repeat in chorus, group
and in pairs

Let’s talk Step 1

Goal: Pupils will practice speaking the structure That’s a… in group

Time: 5 minutes

 Make a model with 1 pupil then have pupils work in groups of 4


to do the task on Let’s talk .
 Pupil will take turn to say the sentence.

Step 2

Goal: Pupils will practice the structure more in a game

Time: 4 minutes
 Have pupils look at the slide and choose the number and
practice saying the structure “That’s a______.”

Let’s sing Step 1

Goal: Pupils will be able to read the song lyrics.

Time: 3 minutes

 Have pupils read the song lyrics in chorus then in groups.

Step 2

Goal: Pupils will be able to sing a long the song

Time: 3 minutes

 Have pupils listen and sing a long the song in chorus then in
groups

Step 3

Goal: Pupils will be able to sing the song with TPR.

Time: 3 minutes

 Have groups create their own TPR for the song then present.
 Finish the song with the TRP for High five and fist bump.

Game Guessing game

Goal: Review the Unit keywords and structure

Time: 5 minutes

• Play the game in groups.

• Pupils take turn in each group to do TPR action and the others
guess and say “That’s____”.

Wrap-up Repeat the words with rhythm and say goodbye.
