Research Report

1. Introduction
The importance of adequate classroom and sitting facilities in a higher education setting
cannot be overemphasized. However, in recent times, students at Federal Polytechnic
Nasarawa have been facing significant infrastructure challenges which hinder effective
learning. This report explores the causes, forms, and effects of this issue, and proposes a
technological solution using E-Learning to alleviate these problems.

2. Problem Identification: Lack of Classroom and Sitting Facilities

Challenge:
- Shortage of adequate classrooms to accommodate growing student population.
- Insufficient sitting arrangements, leading to students standing during lectures or missing
classes.

3. Genesis of the Problem

The problem started due to:
- Population growth: Increased admissions without a corresponding expansion in
infrastructure.
- Limited funding: Insufficient budget allocations for infrastructure development.
- Neglect and poor maintenance: Existing classrooms deteriorating without repair or
upgrades.
- Urbanization pressures: Limited available space for expansion.

4. Form of the Problem

• Overcrowded classrooms: Students often have to sit on the floor or stand.
• Missed lectures: Some students skip classes because there is no space.
• Reduced lecture efficiency: Lecturers struggle to manage large, uncomfortable classes.
• Increased student frustration: Learning is made more stressful and less effective.

5. Effects of the Challenge

• Poor academic performance.
• Health hazards such as back pains and fatigue.
• Lecturer burnout.
• Reduced school reputation.
6. Methodology
Survey:
- Sample Size: 200 respondents (170 students, 30 lecturers)
- Survey Method: Google Forms and Physical Questionnaires

Key Survey Questions and Responses:

- Are there enough classrooms for your department's students? 87% said No
- How often do you attend lectures without sitting properly? 68% said "Very often"
- Have you ever missed a lecture due to lack of space? 55% said "Yes"
- Would you support online learning options if provided? 91% said "Yes"
- How do you rate the comfort level of current classrooms? 72% rated it "Poor"
- Should the Polytechnic invest more in technology-based education? 95% said "Yes"

Observation:
During peak lecture hours, students were observed standing outside lecture halls, sitting on
windowsills, and missing lectures due to lack of space.

7. Proposed Solution: E-Learning System Implementation

Solution Overview:
Deploy a flexible, hybrid E-Learning system that combines physical classes with online
virtual classrooms.

Key Features:
- Online Lecture Streaming.
- Learning Management System (LMS).
- Computer Centers for students without personal devices.
- Training Programs for digital literacy.
- Mobile App Integration.

8. Advantages of E-Learning Over Traditional Expansion

Traditional Expansion:
- Expensive construction and maintenance
- Limited by available land
- Time-consuming (years)
- Static capacity
- Environmental impact

E-Learning Solution:
- Cost-effective deployment
- Scalable to thousands
- Can be deployed within months
- Dynamic, expandable classrooms
- Eco-friendly and paperless

9. Implementation Strategy
- Phase 1: Pilot online learning with selected courses.
- Phase 2: Gradual scale-up to full hybrid learning.
- Phase 3: Continuous feedback and system optimization.
- Phase 4: Integrate virtual reality (VR) in technical courses.

10. Conclusion
The infrastructure challenge at Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa requires urgent and
innovative solutions. Embracing technology through an E-Learning system solves today's
problems and prepares our institution for a digital future.
