PHYSICS JH3
Chapter 4.1 Simple Phenomena of Magnetism
Magnetic Levitation Photo Frame
Objectives:
1. Students can identify and describe the basic properties of magnets, including magnetic
poles and magnetic force.
2. Students can explain how magnetic repulsion (like poles pushing away) can be used to
make an object float or “levitate.”
Overview:
Magnetic levitation is a method by which an object is suspended in the air using only
magnetic forces. This happens because like poles of a magnet repel each other.
Read TB p. 176 – 180 for more information.
Tools and Materials
- 2 Cardboards (20 x 24) cm - Neodymium disk magnet (2 magnet)
- 4 Thermocol patterns (20 x 24) cm - Black tape
- 1 sheet of Marble paper - A4 Paper/Drawing paper
- Scissors/Cutters
- Glue/Clear tape
- 4 Photos
Guiding:
1. Read your textbook page 176 – 180 to find out the information about the magnetic
levitation.
2. Using the materials to create a 3D photo frame.
3. The project must be running in the classroom, do not allowed to do it at home unless you
are told so.
4. Make a poster about the project information include the concept related to the project.
Grading:
The project grade is worth 100 points total. The detail in the next page.
Magnetic Levitation Photo Frame
Grading:
Your photo frame will initially start with a 100 as a total point. You will lose points for the
following items:
Magnetic Levitation performance was not strong and stable = 35 point
The information in poster is not complete:
- Information of project = 10 point
- Explanation about the concept of magnetism used = 10 point
- The poster is not attractive = 5 point
The position of the component is not proportional = 15 point
Appearance : the construction is not clean, attractive, and visually appealing = 20 point
Team work : Not all the members participate = 5 point
Teacher Grading Checklist
Only the teacher will check this part.
