Introduction to Data Mining Concepts

Module 1 introduces the concept of Data Mining, defining it as the process of extracting patterns from large data sets. It emphasizes the relationship between data and analytics, highlighting that data is meaningless without analysis. The module includes activities for personal data analysis and encourages the application of Data Mining concepts to real-world problems.

MODULE 1

1.1 WHAT IS DATA MINING?

Dwithout
ata Mining has been used by anyone, including you,
knowing that such a process exists.

As you might have recalled from the previous page, you

were asked a lot of questions. These questions can be
answered by doing some research over the Internet. You can
just open a web browser and type in your question and, in
seconds, get your answers.

The reason why you were able to do some research is

mainly due to the availability of that data in the web that was
hosted by millions of servers around the world. These servers
provided us the experience of “data-on-demand” service with
the convenience of the digital infrastructure.

But where did that information come from?

OK, let's do some simple data analysis.

Module Activity
1. Write down the subjects that you have taken from the
previous semesters in this table.

(please access your portal to have a complete list of your subjects

and grades)

# Subject Credits Schedule Instructor Grade Major /
Code (units) Minor

2. Compute for your GWA (per semester). _______

3. Identify your highest grades (per semester). _______

4. Identify your lowest grades (per semester). _______

Questions:
1. With your highest grade, can you nd any relationship
with your lowest grade per semester and also the rest
of the semesters?

2. Do you have subjects with the same instructor? If so,

can you nd any relationship with each subject?

Realization:
• Write down a summary of your analysis of all the
possible relationships between subjects you have
taken.

• Answer your own opinion, What is Data Mining?

Discussion

Analytics - the systematic computational analysis of data or

statistics.

Data - facts and statistics collected together for reference or

analysis.

By its de nition, Data and Analytics are a pair of keywords

that de nes the concept of Data Mining.

Data is worthless without analytics, similarly, you cannot

do any analytics without data.

“Machine Learning” and “Arti cial Intelligence” from 1800 to 2022.

Data Mining, in its simplest de nition, is the process of

extracting interesting patterns or knowledge from huge
amounts of data. Data Mining and Analytics paved the way
for the development and realization of Machine Learning and
Arti cial Intelligence.

Research Activity

With the basic concept you have now learned about Data
Mining and Analytics, try to develop one (1) problem similar to
what has been presented (Questioned) in the PREFACE page
and describe how you can use Data Mining to get the answer.
